The event, which was held at Tropicana City Mall in Petaling Jaya, brought together about 200 supporters, including members, participants, sponsors and staff.

“We need the support from each and every one of you to make us a better society.

“By working together to put an end to violence against our women and girls, we can build a louder voice,” said Awam president Ho Yock Lin during the opening ceremony.

The event featured 41 teams comprising 147 participants.

The Nutty Troopers team emerged on top and won a four-day-three-night Krabi-Phuket cruise on board SuperStar Libra.

The issue of gender equality was highlighted during a pop quiz for participants.

Participants were tested on their knowledge of gender- based violence and the politicisation of ethnicity and religion, which are Awam’s thematic focuses.

The event was made possible by main sponsor Star Cruises and venue sponsor Tropicana City Mall, as well as many others who contributed donations in cash and kind.

Awam’s next campaign, the White Ribbon Run and Walk, will be held on Dec 7.

Team effort sought in support of abused women

PETALING JAYA: Stories of violence against women and girls are told each day but All Women's Action Society (AWAM) believes that it takes team effort to make a difference in a victim's life.

Yesterday, Awam organised "Charity Treasure Walk-a-hunt 2014" with the theme - "Team Up for a difference" at Tropicana City Mall to create awareness of violence against women and girls, among younger generation.

"We can't do it alone, we must have people to come together and make a difference," said Awam's president, Ho Yock Lin.

She hopes for a community that is safe, non discriminative and non violent.

She said in May 2014, a 15 year old girl was allegedly gang raped by a group of men in Kereteh, Kelantan. Three weeks later, another 14 year old girl in Pontian, Johor was allegedly raped by six army personnel.

"Where were the neighbours and members of the community? Are they not concerned that this crime took place in their own backyard?" Ho queried.

About 145 participants, mostly young people participated in the hunt, which is held for the ninth year.
Participants must find "answers" based on "clues" (questions), which relates to the Awam's programmes or campaigns.

The top two winners will spend four days and three nights at Phuket-Krabi cruise for two on board of Super Star Libra.

Ho said Awam also intends to raise awareness on "date-rape", sexual harassment in work place, their rights and safety among younger generation.

"Violence is not only limited to rape but also sexual harassment in the office by the people, they know and are familiar with," she said.

The event hopes to raise about RM50,000 funds through participation fees and donation from public to fund their activities.

The event is an excellent opportunity for members of the public to spend a day of fun together with their family and friends, and contribute back to society.
