HOUDINI OF TREASURE HUNTS

Extracted from THS Tulip newsletter (Jan-Mar 2015 Edition)
Houdini of Treasure Hunts

WITH THE hunt of Soroptimist International Club of Bangsar (SICB) on 1st Nov 2014, the day after Halloween night, hunters may rightly ponder whether this could yet be another trick or treat! Would there be any more magic potions left in the COC’s bubbling cauldron to mesmerize the participants?

SICB Hunt with a Heart has increasingly become a signature event for VK Chong to showcase his cryptic trickery. Being his only open annual event in the Hunt Calendar, he certainly stopped at nothing to pull Bugs Bunny out of his trademark cap to hoodwink the hunters.

DOWN THE HUNT MEMORY LANE 2014

The Year in Retrospective

Well…another year finally ends! As the curtain falls on 2014, let’s glance back at yet another amazing year of treasure hunts. With more than 70 events, hunters could really pick and choose when it comes to treasure hunting.

Whether these were purely the cryptic type, or hunts with challenges; whether these were for learning purpose (such as THS Gold hunts) or the ones with grand prizes (such as NST Motor Hunt 2014); whether these were just walk hunts or inter-state overnight adventures, everyone would have their favourite precious moments.

For the major hunts, we have the usual NST Motor Hunt 2014 (which offered a bigger grand prize this time), TNT Charity Hunt 2014, Kiwanis Charity Hunt 2014 and even TopGear Treasure Hunt 2014. There were also several World Cup-related hunts during 2014.

Check out here as HNN highlighted here a list of Top 10 memorable hunt moments in 2014!

HNN HUNT STATISTICS 2014

With the conclusion of 2014, how did you think the year go for treasure hunting world?

Probably you may have wondered how many hunts we had; who the prolific COCs are; who are the top winners for 2014 etc

As usual, HNN has put together some statistical data about treasure hunts during 2014.
On record, HNN has noted 75 hunts during the year, with the highest number of hunts (9) in June, August and November.

Amazingly there are about 41 Clerks of Course (COCs) or Technical Advisors out there, with the most prolific being Jayaram Menon/ Road Runners (13), Purple Antz (5) and Fuad Dahlan (5).

You can find more interesting charts about the hunt events, COCs and the achievement of treasure hunters below.

HOW TO AUGMENT YOUR HUNT EXPERIENCE?

Extracted from THS Tulip newsletter (Oct - Dec Edition 2014)
How To Augment Your Hunt Experience?

FOR PARTICIPANTS regularly hunting during 1990’s, they were fairly familiar with cryptic posers, navigational tulips and hard copy of reference materials.

The need to have knowledge accessible at hand often led to the presence of books and files in the vehicle. And the practice has remained relatively unchanged during the turn of millennium.

However with the advent of mobile gadgets and the boom of internet surfing, the landscape of treasure hunting has significantly shifted.

5 LESSONS OF SUCCESS FROM THE WORLD CUP 2014 FOR HUNTERS

Extracted from THS Tulip newsletter (Jul-Sep Edition 2014)

THE WORLD seemed to grind to a standstill every four years, when most people were somehow caught in the magic of The World Cup.

During June and July recently, the talks around the ‘mamak’ stalls invariably revolved around the favorite squads, star players, wonderful goals and defining moments during the matches in Brazil.

As the football fiesta came to an end with Germany crowned as the champion, it is interesting to reflect on the tournament and how this can relate to our world of treasure hunt.

THS WALK HUNT 2014 IPOH - News

LEG 1 (16th Mar 2014)
Extracted from THS Tulip newsletter (Apr-Jun Edition 2014)
TREASURES OF THS IPOH HUNTS

Final briefing

ANOTHER QUARTER and another box checked for THS events. This time, the focus was on the capital of Perak state, historically famous for its tin-mining industry.

From the turn of 20th century, great influx of Chinese immigrants, including rival clans was brought into Ipoh for the mining of its precious mineral.

Yet recently, several rival teams also thronged this old city to engage in an activity to unearth treasures; albeit those of a different nature.

CONFESSION OF A COC

Extracted from THS Tulip newsletter (Jan-Mar Edition 2014)

FOR THS members in Penang, the year 2013 witnessed a unique trilogy of treasure hunts! With the theme Down Memory Lane 2013, the hunts invariably put the participants’ knowledge to the test, while their cryptic skill was simultaneously challenged.

“How did you manage to devise such a hunt? Where did you derive the idea?” a hunter eventually asked me after one of the hunts. Well… it wasn’t an overnight impulse; in fact the brainchild had been percolating over the weeks.

DOWN THE HUNT MEMORY LANE 2013

It’s Auld Lang Syne moment again as we say goodbye to another year!

As 2013 draws to a close, it’s time for us to reflect on the year and consider its ups and downs, with regard to treasure hunts.

Surely some of you may have memorable moments of certain hunts:- perhaps the huge turnout for the mega NST Motor Hunt 2013, the fun of the traditional Kiwanis annual hunt, the environmental challenges of Mengo Green Hunt 2013, the ‘rising’ popularity of Intermark Tower Race To The Top 2013 and many more!

We can definitely consider that as far as treasure hunts are concerned, 2013 was never dull! With more than 60 hunts, the hunters may be spoilt for options; yet there were also a few much-anticipated hunts that went missing from 2013 calendar!

Find out more as HNN bids a customary farewell to 2013 with a list of Top 10 memorable hunt moments!

SLOW START, EXCELLENT FINISH

Extracted from THS Tulip newsletter (Oct-Dec Edition 2013)

IT WAS on 16th January 2011 when the idea was first mooted.

As more than 20 hunters assembled in Purple Antz office to discuss about THS future, the notion of THS Motor Hunt was briefly mentioned. Everyone readily concurred that this should be one of the milestones down the road.

Fast forward 2 years and 8 months later, and one of the To-Do boxes has been apparently ticked.

Yes, the dream has become a reality! However to boast that the journey went well, without hiccup would be misleading!

WHAT A WONDERFUL 2013!

Extracted from THS Tulip newsletter (Jul-Sep Edition 2013)

IT HAS been a wonderful 2013 so far; so perhaps a THS hunt IN 2013 could turn out to be a THS hunt ON 2013!

Down the Memory Lane 2013 – The Beginning was the hunt theme; surely an unmissable hint in the Briefing Notes! So a bit of advance research and a fair knowledge of 2013 news would give anyone a slight edge.

Yet some participants completely ignored this at their own expense. If they chose to come unprepared, then they must also be prepared to come unstuck.

The excuses for being not up-to-date were aplenty; but none as comical as the confession of a hunter “I don’t trust mainstream newspapers; so I only read Malaysia Kini!” Undoubtedly he would fare well in any political-related posers.

JEOPARDY OF DOUBLE COCS, COCS OF DOUBLE JEOPARDY!

Extracted from THS Tulip newsletter (Apr-Jun Edition 2013)

COC Ruben & Lenny
KLANG VALLEY 23 MAR 2013: With new power, comes new responsibility! With New Year, comes new resolution!

Perhaps a fitting time to learn from previous experience, discard present shortcoming and enhance future performance!

Past feedback suggested that while several THS walk hunts in 2012 were commendable, perhaps one or two were found wanting in hunter-friendly questions and routes, but what was troubling the participants was whether the COC will get it right this time.

Would it be a Dr. Jekyll hunt, or another Mr. Hyde nightmare?

So when hunters Ruben Enbasegaram and Lenny Wan were handed the rein to clerk the first THS KL hunt in 2013 season, one  suspects that there was unspoken trepidation and great expectation about the ”friendliness” mentioned earlier!

DOWN THE HUNT MEMORY LANE 2012

For ardent treasure hunters, 2012 was surely an exciting year!

With more than 70 hunts during the period, inevitably all hunters have their own preferences of certain events; perhaps the memory of sweet victories, the grief of near misses, the revival of theSun Motor Hunt, the arrival of new hunts etc.

Whatever the reasons, as the clock ticked towards the new year of 2013, it's always interesting to review 2012 events.

As usual, HNN would like to bid farewell to the year with a list of Top 10 memorable hunt moments during 2012.

HNN HUNT STATISTICS 2012

Surely time flies when we are having fun during treasure hunts.

So what has exactly happened during 2012? How many hunts have we had? Who were the COCs? Who are the top winners for 2012?

As usual, HNN has compiled some statistical data about treasure hunts during the year.

On record, HNN has recorded 72 hunts during 2012, with the highest number of hunts in July (11), followed by June (10).

JUST PERFECT

(by Lenny Wan)

“Just perfect”, I thought when I read about the Consumer Hunt BPK 2012, a ‘free’ hunt on a day when I was free. I roped in another “ekor”, Ruben, who did not know much about the hunt and didn’t even know the prizes on offer. He was under the impression that it was just a small hunt on a Sunday in Semenyih to quench our thirst for hunts (especially after a month of May which was largely bereft of hunts).

The two of us arrived at the carnival site at TESCO, Semenyih that lazy Sunday morning with not much expectation but to our pleasant surprise, we discovered that the consumer hunt was part of a series of activities for the “Bulan Pengguna Kebangsaan”, which was organised on a rather large scale.

CROUCHING COCKROACH, HIDDEN TREASURE

Extracted from THS Tulip (Jul-Sep Edition 2012)

SUBANG JAYA 14 APRIL 2012: It's been 2 months since the inaugural mind-boggling THS Hunt, jointly clerked by Jay and VK. Perhaps a lacuna long enough for the mental wound from the first to have healed and the itch for a sequel to become unbearable!

With this THS Walk Hunt 2012 - Leg 2 nicely sandwiched between 2 epic hunts of Putrajaya and NPC-Celcom in April, it may appear that the choice of 14th April seems to be rightly made after a consultation with some fengshui gurus.

SUPER HUNTERS ASSEMBLE

PANGKOR 21 APRIL 2012: Just one week before the superheroes assembled in The Avengers movie, the super hunters gallantly converged in NPC-Celcom Treasure Hunt 2012 to confront a trickster ‘god’!

The impressive turnout of 82 teams at Menara Celcom on the fateful 21st April morning predictably showcased almost all the Who’s Who of treasure hunt world, reminiscent of the ‘Secret Wars’ showdown in the comicdom!

Secret Wars of Treasure Hunt

Chief among the protagonists was the fantastic 4-Ekor, the team of 3 guys and a gal who miraculously survived the devastating exposure during a Kiwanis mission to Penang, and somehow returned to KL stronger, by decisively clinching a hat-trick of 3 hunts (Eye-Q Hunt 2011, Jingle Bell Hunt 2011 and Sentul Hunt 2012) within 2 months.

INTO THE PURPLE ZONE

(by JayMen)

A month of Sundays
Rajj Melambram of Purple Antz has for some time now been reminding me that I have never joined any of the Antz open hunts. I can't quite confirm it but something always cropped up over the last 2 years whenever Antz had a hunt on.

So it was time to rectify this unhealthy situation as I always believe that as COC, one needs to join as many varied hunts as possible to sense what the tenor and style fo the newer setters might be. Of course, one can look at the questions later in the comfort of one's den but there is nothing like taking part in a hunt - and undergo the challenge in the field.

In fact February/ March has been an extraordinary month. I took part in 4 hunts over 4 weekends! I'm sure no Penang guy has done that. First was Chong Foo Seong's Dragon Drive on Feb 12th, then came Shandra Dass's Klang Rotary Hunt on Feb 18th; next was Mahindra Satyam Charity Treasure Hunt 2012 by Purple Antz on 26th Feb and on March 3rd we had Trailblazers' Publika Hunt.

A TEACHING MOMENT

(by JayMen)

KLANG VALLEY 18 FEBRUARY 2012: Once in a while, a hunt comes along that poses questions which can be a great teaching moment. Such a one was Shandra Dass’s Rotary Club of Klang Treasure Hunt 2012 on Feb 18th.
There were 11 difficult and unfamiliar questions that can now serve as a case study for how difficult questions need to be handled. Although “difficulty” consists of about half a dozen aspects, 2 will be sufficient to grade these Qs. These are Economy and Accuracy. Economy here is defined as absence of unnecessary information. Accuracy here is defined as freedom from error.

DOWN THE HUNT MEMORY LANE 2011

What a year it was at the world of treasure hunt in 2011!

As we sang "Auld Lang Syne" at the stroke of midnight to celebrate the New Year, it's interesting to reflect on the events of 2011!

For treasure hunters, it has been a year of mounting excitement and thrill, with a few valleys of disappointments!

HNN would like to bid farewell to 2011, with hunt images, news and reflections on this memorable year.

Here's a look at the great fun, disappointments and the promising future of treasure hunts!
