theSun Motor Hunt 2008

theSun Motor Hunt 2009

theSun Motor Hunt was the brainchild of Mr. Phillip Karuppiah, a former managing director of theSun and an avid hunter himself. Inaugurated in 2004, theSun Motor Hunt aptly known as "The Mother of All Hunts" earned its moniker from the record number of participants taking part in this event each year, in addition to the record number of prizes handed out by generous sponsors. In 2006, a whopping 280 teams registered to take part in this event.

TheSun Motor Hunt, which is within the vicinity of the Klang Valley, is certainly not for the faint hearted, for it is well known to be one of the more challenging, if not the most challenging treasure hunt event on the hunting calendar. Teams are separated into two categories of Master and Novice with elite teams competing in the Master category having to face questions of a much higher level of difficulty.

LANUN INC ARE CHAMPS AFTER TIE-BREAKER

PETALING JAYA (Nov 9, 2009) : A tie for the top place in theSun Motor Hunt 2009 led to the top three teams the Open Category having to take part in a tie-breaker on stage during the prize presentation ceremony on Sunday night.

At the end of the tie-breaker where the teams were given 90 seconds to match a list of fonts with logos of the hunt's sponsors, Lanun Inc emerged champions while team Lomak Cili Api took second place and Fun Hunters were placed third.

Lanun Inc. member and Maxis engineer Tan Cheng Peng, 37, said it was a big surprise to the team that it won the top prize.

"We were rushing against time to finish the second leg of the hunt which required participants to purchase four items.
"In the end we looked over and realised how many answers we had skipped, and became quite worried. So winning was a big surprise for us." "The team showed a lot of composure, and didn't break even when the questions became stressful," Tan said, adding that "winning was not important, but staying together and focused was more important."

"We love the sport of treasure hunting, and hope theSun will provide more in the future," he added.

Lomak Cili Api member Asri Ali, 38, a MAS property officer, agreed that time constraints was a critical factor in treasure hunting.

"You need to tune your mind to how hunts work and that can be achieved by participating in more hunts," he added.

The team members each won a Samsung 32 inch LCD TV while the Fun Hunters won four Samsung top freezer refrigerators.

Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony, theSun managing director Chan Kien Sing said the hunt was a public outreach programme aimed at interacting and connecting with more people.

He was pleased to note that although the hunt this year was very challenging, many of the participants managed to get the right answers.

On hand to give out the prizes to the winners were Great Eastern Life Assurance CEO Koh Yaw Hui, Samsung Malaysia marketing director Jimmy Tan and representatives of major sponsors.

Meanwhile, in the Masters Category, veteran treasure hunters Paradigm Runners comprising Jayaram Menon, Chin Kar Peng, Sam Rahman and Liong Chian Min beat 20 other teams to take top place, winning each of them a Samsung 32-inch Full High Definition LCD television.

For the team, winning the Masters was sweet victory as they had won third prize in the Masters Category last year and second prize in the 2007 hunt.

"Our victory was "long overdue"," said Sam Rahman. "You just have to keep at it by participating in good hunts," said Jayaram when asked what was the secret to the team's success. Meanwhile, Chin said sharing ideas and maximising each member’s strengths was the vital ingredient to any team's success. "Having a strategy is also important as it helps when one has to make a tough decision like skipping clues," he added.

Meanwhile Hunters R Us -- comprising businessman Chai Kok Khai, Florence Ting, Margaret Sha and Chong Voon Kiat -- clinched the second prize in the Masters category winning each of them a Samsung 32-inch High Definition LCD Television.

Chai said solving cryptic clue exercises and persistent acquisition of knowledge are important in solving clues.

"People interested in hunts should do it regularly. They have to read more and do more cryptic quizes," he added.

Third place went to 2 Sneakies + 2 Innocents, who each received a Samsung top freezer refrigerator.

Team member Julie Tan Hui Siang, a DHL Cyberjaya system analyst, said the team members participated in more hunts this year and it helped with solving the clues in theSun Motor Hunt.

Three of the team members had competed in the Open category last year.

A lucky draw offering prizes galore, provided a chance for those who didn't win in the treasure hunt event to win something, and for those who had to win even more goodies.

The top lucky draw prize went to banker Khairol Idzwan Abdul Khaiyun who received a Samsung 40-inch LCD TV while second prize went to civil servant Norul Azura Md Amran, 27, who received a Samsung 37-inch LCD TV and third prize was won by DPS Consultant engineer Junaidy Matjani, 28, received a Samsung 32-inch LCD TV.

The main sponsor of the hunt was Great Eastern Life Assurance, while Samsung was prize sponsor and Petronas Primax 95 was the fuel sponsor.

Other major sponsors were HSBC, McDonald’s, Sports Toto, Kao Men’s Biore and Northport while Sime Darby Convention Centre was the venue sponsor.

FUN IN THE SUN FOR 1,000 HUNTERS IN 275 CARS

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 2, 2008) : It was another roaring success. More than 1,000 hunters in 275 cars took part in theSun Motor Hunt , the fifth in the series this morning.

Getting up in the wee hours of the morning was not a problem for the eager hunters, who wanted to be part of the biggest motor hunt event in the Klang Valley.

There was a hive of activity at the start and finish point -- the Sime Darby Convention Centre in Bukit Kiara -- as the cars began to arrive, and the participants making sure that everything was in order before the 7.30 flag-off.

After breakfast provided by hunt sponsor McDonalds, the hunters -- made up of veterans as well as first-timers --assembled for the final briefing by clerk-of-course Dominic Roache, of Time-Out Solution Sdn Bhd.

The hunters were divided into two categories -- Open and Masters -- for which there were different sets of questions and routes. The Masters category was for regular winners of motor treasure hunts and the Open category for the general public.

COC Dominic of Time Out Solutions
giving final briefing

The hunt, which took the participants around the Klang Valley, required them to solve cryptic clues and find 'treasures'. It offered prizes worth more than RM200,000.

This year's hunt had a total of four areas in which hunters had to search in turn for clues, both from the 'tulips' as well as the new visual clues called 'picture tools', introduced by Roache last year.

"Actually, the first leg was done in a similar manner to last year with picture clues to find the question sectors in one commercial area," Roache said.

"Basically, we had all the cars coming into the area but because of the many question sectors, they were spread out," he said, adding that it worked quite well.

"The first leg this year was in Kota Damansara and the second leg was in Puchong and Taman Tun Dr Ismail and there were only 15 questions which participants had to do.

"There were seven or eight bolded questions. The bolded questions are more difficult. The level of difficulty was higher because we also wanted to spot the 'Masters material' -- those who have the Masters quality in them. We had to have some questions of that level for the budding Masters to break."

Each team had to answer 35 questions and buy four 'treasures'. The second 'treasure' had a charity twist to it, as it was sold by Bethany Home of Teluk Intan. Despite the limited time and heavy traffic, the teams were not only focused on finding the treasure but also generously contributed by buying more than was needed. The amount raised for the home was RM4,049.

There was also a clue on air -- Mix FM provided the clue between 10am and 10.30am to a treasure.

The participants were given seven hours to complete their hunt. The flag-off, involving car No. 146, began at 7.30am and the first two teams to reach the finish line were in Car No. 225 and Car No. 121, who came in at 12.55pm and 1pm, respectively.

theSun Distribution Channels senior manager Joehari Abdul Jabbar summed the hunt up as "bigger prizes, bigger venue and a bigger crowd".

"The number of participants has increased, so we had to chose a bigger venue to cater to the bigger crowd," he said.

"The number of prizes has also increased. We gave prizes up to the 145th position in the Open category whereas, last year, we only gave prizes up to the 120th position.

"We were not exactly expecting such a big crowd, only 250 teams, but because of the overwhelming response, we had to accept 275 teams."

Joehari said that although many were regular hunters, there were more 'newbies' this year. "Overall, the clues had been tweaked up to a more difficult level," he said.

The dinner and prize-presentation ceremony were held at Sime Darby Convention Centre last night.

The main sponsore of the theSun Motor Hunt was Great Eastern Life Assurance (M) Bhd, and the other sponsors were HSBC Bank and McDonalds.

The prize sponsor was Philips Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and Petronas Primax 3 was the fuel sponsor. Mix FM was official media partner and the venue partner was Sime Darby Convention Centre.

The other co-sponsors were Nesvita, Milo Fuze, Revive Isotonic Drink, Tropicana Twister, Nescafe Energo , Yeo's, Elken, Ginvera, X-1R, Berjaya Air, and Northport. The clerk-of-course was Time-Out Solution Sdn Bhd.

Mother of All Hunts: theSun Mother Hunt

FOR all motor hunters, theSun Motor Hunt is high up on their calendar of "must take part" events. So popular is this event, that even without massive run-up publicity, the target number of participants would be reached. This year's entries were closed within 10 days!

So it was, that on 2 November 2008, theSun ensured that the roads in the Klang Valley were buzzing with activities and excitement as cars loaded with treasure hunters, went out searching for answers to clues for great prizes with that rush of adrenalin only enthusiasts will feel.

Dubbed as the 'Mother of All Hunts' by the hunting fraternity, the treasure hunt was flagged off at the Sime Darby Convention Centre in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, the venue partner for the annual event. With clerk-of-course Time Out Solutions Sdn Bhd, theSun Motor Hunt was a resounding success with 280 teams and 1,120 participants driving all over Klang Valley seeking clues and unscrambling them to win attractive prizes worth RM200,000. It was a record in terms of entries.

The main sponsor of the hunt was Great Eastern Life Assurance and Petronas Primax 3 as the fuel sponsor. The winners received prizes from Philips, including home theatre systems, MP3 players, DVD players, 32in and 37in flatscreen televisions. The other sponsors were McDonald's and HSBC and co-sponsors were Nesvita, Milo Fuze, Revive Isotonic drink, Tropicana Twister, Nescafe Energo, Yeo's, Elken, X-1R, Ginvera, Berjaya Air, Northport and mixFM as the media partner. The year 2008 marked the fifth year of the hunt with prizes offered up to 145th position!

The hunt was divided into three categories - Masters, Open and Closed. The Masters category comprised professional and seasoned treasure hunters. To qualify for the Masters category, each team with its fixed team members must win at least three other hunts in one season. The Closed category was for staff of theSun while the Open category was for the public. The Masters category saw 20 teams, followed by 10 teams in the Closed category. The remaining teams were in the Open category.

Prior to the hunt day, there was a briefing session where participants were given guidelines on how to hunt. The teams must also make sure their vehicle used is roadworthy and safe in all aspects with a valid road tax. On hunt day, some teams came as early as 5am to the Sime Darby Convention Centre car park to secure a good flag-off position. There was also a final briefing at the flag-off point about the guidelines. Each car was then flagged off with time recorded on their answer sheet and were given a 'Tulip', which is the road guide to be followed with indication of question on selected sectors. This is the point where all participants would be cryptically challenged in getting the answers right while obeying traffic rules and being alert.

The hunt was given a different approach last year as media partner mixFM was roped in to provide one clue throughout the hunt. The clue was broadcasted at a specific time and team members had to tune in to listen to the clue. However, the clue was only part of the answer as the teams had to find other clues to solve it.

Clues in last year's hunt were also made more cryptic to live up to the hunt's reputation of being the 'Mother of All Hunts'.

Although the initial flag-off started with 280 teams, 15 teams dropped out at the end of the race, beaten by the clock. The prize-presentation dinner was held at the Convention Centre where winners were treated to a sumptuous dinner before getting the rewards for their hard work. In the Masters category, the first prize was won by Latent Talent with a score of 111. The team won the first prize in the second edition of the hunt in 2005 but slipped to 11th spot last year.
Second place in the Masters category went to Cryptically Challenged, with a score of 108 while The Paradigm Runners, who scored 105 points, finished third.

GREAT FUN AND PRIZES AT SUN HUNT

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 4, 2007): The fourth edition of most-awaited motor treasure hunt in the Klang Valley -- theSun Motor Hunt -- which saw the participation of 1,000 hunters in 250 cars -- was held yesterday.

Prizes valued at almost RM200,000 comprising Philips products and Royal Selangor pewter products were won.

Although the rain and traffic jam conspired with the clerk-of-course to frustrate the hunters at almost every turn, most of the participants were in good spirit and took the mental and physical
tests in their stride.

What kept them going, apart from their determination and tenacity, was the chance to win the wide range of electronic goods and 185 lucky draw prizes.

Hunters listening intently during the hunt briefing

The flag-off was at the National Science Centre car park in Bukit Kiara. After breakfast provided by Nestle, a final briefing was held before the first car was flagged-off at 7.30am. This year, Time-Out Solution's Dominic Roache devised a new way to disperse the huge convoy of cars and to prevent them clogging up busy thoroughfares.

This it did by dividing the hunt into two legs.

Sectors for the first leg (Damansara Uptown and Damansara Jaya) were determined by visual clues instead of the traditional tulips. Hunters handed in their answers at the McDonald's outlets next to the Sunway toll and Section 15, Subang Jaya, where they collected lunch packs of
McChicken, banana pie and bottled water and questions for the final stretch.

The second leg saw hunters scouring signboards in Puchong, Sunway Damansara and Setapak before finishing at the Royal Selangor factory and showroom.

There were three categories -- masters for regularly top placed hunters, open and closed for staff of Nexnews publications. Each team, with not more than four members per car, had to answer 35 questions and a road safety quiz as well as find and buy four "treasures". Mix FM provided clues over the air between 10am and 10.30am to one of the treasures. The masters took a different route and had a shorter time.

Participants had to fight against time, traffic and fatigue to complete the hunt within the stipulated seven hours or risk penalty points. Their gratification was the joy of finding the right answer and a cool cup of Milo at the finish point.

Participants gathered at Menara PGRM in Cheras for the dinner and prize presentation ceremony. "Ahhs" and "ohs" echoed throughout the cavernous Dewan Wawasan when answers to the clues were beamed on two giant screens.

Penang participants of theSun Motor Hunt 2007

There were also laughter and embarrassed looks when some of the more "creative" and answers were revealed.

The winners of the Masters (17 prizes) and Open (115 prizes) categories were awarded  electronic goods from Philips and pewter photo frames from Royal Selangor Pewter.

The Open category was won by Ultra Saurus consisting of Steven Arockiaraj, Sanjay Abdullah, Rahmah and Sumita Devadas, who each took home a 32in LCD television and pewter frames.

"This is our second time participating in theSun hunt, and we are ecstatic at winning the first position," said Sumita.

Last year, Steven said, "we were in 78th position and we brushed up our skills by joining other hunts".

As for the Masters category, Spring Chicken's members were also no stranger to theSun Motor Hunt but Liew Kok Seng, Datuk Ramesh Rajarathnam, Cheong Foo Seong and Lim Kok Yew were not a team previously.

"We found it more challenging this year and it had a new twist to the setting of questions," said Ramesh.

"Last year was tough too, but Time-Out Solutions always manages to keep us on the edge of the seat, making it more exciting and challenging," Liew said.

"Not to mention, the prizes are amazing," Cheong quipped, whose team also took home the 32 inch LCD television and pewter frames from Royal Selangor.

Second place in the masters category went to Paradigm Runners and Hunters R Us was third.

Ultraman Cosmos was second in the open category and third was Ex-Phileo Plus 1 comprising Phillip Karuppiah, Julius Evanson, Geetha Kanny and Mani Karuppiah.

"I'm happy to participate in a hunt which I originated and am pleased it has reached a level to be known as the mother of all hunts," said Phillip, the general manager of LexisNexis Malaysia who initiated theSun Motor Hunt four years ago when he was Sun Media managing
director.

The two lucky draw grand prize of a 32in Philips LCD television valued at RM3,000 each went to Eliana Takbir Ahmad and an ecstatic Lydia Shamini.

The main sponsor of the hunt was Great Eastern Life Insurance. Other sponsors were Philips, Royal Selangor and McDonald's. The co-sponsors were Nestle, Procter & Gamble, Elken, Eraman, Pathlab, Unilever, True Fitness, Boh Plantations, Permanis Effem Foods Malaysia and Quantum Global. Mix FM was the media partner and Petronas the fuel sponsor.

MOTOR HUNT EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

KUALA LUMPUR: It was the mother of all hunts - the biggest hunt of the year, with 280 teams, over 1,100 participants, and RM180,000 worth of prizes.

The eagerly anticipated theSun Motor Hunt 2006 on Saturday met and exceeded all expectations.

Main sponsor Great Eastern exhibited unwavering support for the hunt by sending in 17 teams.

Whispering sweet nothing!

Serious hunters on the prowl

To level the playing field and make the hunt a fun and satisfying venture for all, well-known teams who had performed well over the years were placed in the Masters category, while amateurs were placed in the Open category.

Beating 18 other teams in the Masters category team was "Hunters R' Us" which comprised Chai Koh Khai, Margaret Sha, Vincent Woo, and Chong Voon Kiat.

"For us, this is the premier league. Everyone in this category is very good. I believe we won as a matter of luck; we just happened to be on form today," said Woo modestly.

"We hold theSun Motor Hunt in high esteem, and we really enjoy the challenge presented by the Masters' category. It makes for a truly satisfying hunt," he added.

No less glorious was the grand-prize winner in the Open Category, "The Jackals"Ñ Chan Kah Sing, Tan Soh Cheen, S. Retnendran and Tan Kok Cheeng.

"We started hunting seriously in the last three years. In last year's theSun Motor Hunt, we were placed second, so this is a step up for us!" said Chan.

"We're looking forward to next year's hunt, but we hope we're not promoted to the Masters category Ñ its clues are so tough!" he added.

Both teams went home with prizes totalling RM10,000 each, comprising four 29" flat screen TVs and four DVD home theatre systems, courtesy of prize sponsor Philips.

The first runners-up, team "JKR Chuckers" for the Masters category, and "Dream Team" for the Open category, went home with RM8,000 worth of Philips electronics each.

The third place, with RM5,000 in prizes, went to team "Cryptically Challenged" in the Masters category, and team "Mixed Codes" in the Open category.

All participants in the Masters category and the top 110 teams in the Open Category went home with prizes that night.

The hunt started at the National Science Centre with the first team, "HR Hunters" turning up at 5.15am, winning them a special prize from Nestle.

As the other teams turned up, they breakfasted on Nescafe and NesVita, courtesy of hunt co-sponsor Nestle and Mexican buns provided by theSun.

After the final briefing, the teams in the Open category were flagged of at 7.30am by Great Eastern executive vice-president (finance and corporate affairs) Bruce Lee, and Nexnews group managing director and editor-in-chief Ho Kay Tat.

Lee, refusing to be left out, hopped into a car and became a hunter himself, leaving Ho to flag off the teams in the Masters category at 8.30am.

The teams dashed around the Klang Valley solving clues and gathering treasures, rushing against time to complete the hunt in time. Finally, around 2pm, the teams submitted their answer sheets and treasures before stopping for a well-deserved lunch provided by
Domino's Pizza.

The hunters met again for a night of feasting and entertainment at Dewan Wawasan, Menara PGRM, Cheras, where the answers were disclosed to many "oohs" and "ahs", the results announced and the prize giving ceremony was held.

Other sponsors of theSun Motor Hunt 2006 were fuel sponsor Primax, media partners MIX.FM, event organiser Moves & Shakes and Clerk-of-Course Time Out Solutions Sdn Bhd.

Co-sponsors included Milo Fuze, Maggi HotCup, Nestle Bonus, Nestle Coffee Mate, Bleu, Cadbury, X-1R, Excel, True Fitness, and Metrojaya.
