As 2013 draws to a close, it’s time for us to reflect on the year and consider its ups and downs, with regard to treasure hunts.
Surely some of you may have memorable moments of certain hunts:- perhaps the huge turnout for the mega NST Motor Hunt 2013, the fun of the traditional Kiwanis annual hunt, the environmental challenges of Mengo Green Hunt 2013, the ‘rising’ popularity of Intermark Tower Race To The Top 2013 and many more!
We can definitely consider that as far as treasure hunts are concerned, 2013 was never dull! With more than 60 hunts, the hunters may be spoilt for options; yet there were also a few much-anticipated hunts that went missing from 2013 calendar!

Top 10 Memorable Hunt Moments
Treasure Hunt Society of Malaysia (THS) successfully organized its inaugural motor hunt on 8th Sep 2013. With the event initially proposed during THS inception in 2011, it must be said that the idea has been in the pipeline for quite a while.
With a respectable turnout of 16 teams, COC Purple Antz certainly didn’t disappoint with their typically challenging questions.
As usual, their questions were divided into 2 sets, to cater for both Gold and Diamond hunters. So far the feedbacks had been positive, with more hoping to come back in 2014 (Read More).

2. Sweet Moments for M&M (Margaret & Ming Yang)
The year of 2013 must surely belong to the Master hunters Margaret Sha and Lim Ming Yang!
Being the members of the team Hunters R Us, their names have appeared as Champion in as many as 16 hunts, either individually or as a team, with most victories during second half of 2013.

On personal record, Margaret Sha clinched victory 13 times, while Lim Ming Yang came in a close second with 12. Quite a remarkable achievement indeed!
What a fruitful year for them and their team!
3. What's App Group for Hunt Beginners
Exclusively for THS Gold Members, What's App Group THS Gold was set up in Aug 2013 as THS initiative to improve the hunt beginners and accelerate their learning curve.
The objective of this THS Gold Group is to facilitate a forum for the newbies to share hunt-related matters and moderators to provide guidance to them.
With CK Loh as the Group Administrator, there were lively discussion on cryptic clues, the sharing of hunt questions and the explanation of armchair hunts over the course of last 5 months. Sometimes it also served as an avenue for newcomers to search for teammates for upcoming events.
It is encouraging to notice many members in the Group from all over Malaysia, such as Klang Valley, Penang, Perak, Pahang and Sabah.
4. Hunts that went WOW and AWOL!!!
The traditional Grand Slam hunts have been Putrajaya Hunt, Kiwanis Treasure Hunt, Mensa Hunt and theSun Motor Hunt. Unfortunately theSun Motor Hunt pulled a disappearing act this year, after a brief resurrection in 2012.
Also conspicuously missing the boat in 2013 was the annual Top Gear Motor Hunt.
Despite the absence of theSun Motor Hunt 2013, a few notable hunts helped to plug the gap and remedy the heartache.
New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2013 has more or less compensated for the missing event, with a hunt worthy of Grand Slam status.
With more than 1,000 people and 268 teams participating on 16th June 2013, the hunt certainly attracted lots of hunters too! Of course, the main attraction was the Polo Sedan car (sponsored by Volkswagen), which was up for grab for the top hunters!
Another 3 major hunts of the year were TNT Charity Hunt 2013, NPC-FGV Heritage Hunt 2013 and Mengo Green Hunt 2013.
In its 3rd year running, TNT Charity Hunt attracted about 320 participants in 3 categories – Open, Regular and TNT. The hunt took the hunters to various locations, such as Petaling Jaya, Pudu, Bukit Bintang and Cheras.
On the other hand, about 160 hunters joined NPC-FGV Heritage Hunt 2013 on an overnight hunt from KL to Malacca. What was rather memorable was the culmination of the event with a trishaw hunt in the Historical City; certainly an experience not to be missed by avid hunters.
Mengo Green Hunt 2013 garnered more than 100 teams, with the organizer Mengo (Malaysian Environmental Non-Governmental Organisations) aiming to instil awareness of works on sustainable development and environmental conservation.
Hunters were required to walk and use the LRT (Light Rapid Transit) in a hunt that covered a distance of at least 5km.
5. Pava’s Month
It must have felt like a déjà vu feeling for treasure hunters, as they seemed to face the same COC again and again in October.
COC Pavananthan clerked a record of 5 open hunts within that month, starting with National Anaesthesia Day 2013 Treasure Hunt on 12th and Deepavali Hunt 2013 on 20th.
The peak came during 26th-27th Oct weekend, with another 3 Pava's hunts - NPC-FGV Heritage Hunt 2013, Bio-Diesel Drive Hunt 2013 and Mengo Green Hunt 2013.
6. Who’s Hoo and Wong!
As usual, we have been looking out for new hunters, who have displayed encouraging results during 2013 and potential talent to make it among the masters!
This year, HNN vote for the upcoming stars goes to Lee Kean Hoo and Anthony Wong, who clinched several victories in THS events.

They had a decent run of wins in 2013, starting with THS Walk Hunt 2013 – KL Leg 1 (March), followed by KL Leg 2 (June). Of course, their best win came with a numero uno performance in THS Motor Hunt 2013 (September)!
Not to forget, Lee Kean Hoo also emerged as champion twice in THS Armchair Hunt – Gold Category.
7. New HNN Milestone
With HNN visitors approaching 200,000 since its birth in February 2011, it has been an encouraging record, with average 180 visitors daily.
More significantly during 2013, the visitors averaged about 260 daily, with the all-time monthly record high of 10,584 visitors within June 2013.
HNN certainly appreciates its growing popularity of the blog and aims to continuously improve with more features in 2014!
8. Armchair Attraction
During 2013, a feature of THS Tulip magazine is fast gaining popularity among THS members. THS Armchair Hunt contest was created to encourage the hunters to try out the cryptic questions.
With slightly easier questions in Sofa category for beginners and 10 mind-numbing posers in Rack category for seasoned hunters, the contest aims to cater for all levels; while providing sufficient time (sometimes upto 3 weeks) for the hunters to attempt them

9. 4-Ekor Really Struck The Jackpot!
The biggest winner of all must surely go to the team 4-Ekor (Lee Ling Fei, Lenny Wan, Ruben Enbasegaram and Yeong Kig Siew) who won the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2013!
As the champion of the Regular category, they had a chance to bag the grand prize in a lucky draw, with the champion of the Beginner and media/sponsor categories.
When Ruben eventually opened the winning envelope that clinched a brand-new Volkswagen Polo sedan worth RM100k for his team, words couldn't have described his unbridled joy.
“The whole affair was challenging. Even waking up in the morning today was a difficult task. This victory is the fruit of our labour after a long and tiring day,” Ruben quipped during the post-hunt interview.
10. Down Memory Lane 2013
Up north at the Pearl of Orient, the hunters experienced a unique trilogy.
COC Liong Chian Min took the opportunities to expose the northern hunters to the key headlines and major incidents during 2013, with topics ranging from celebrations to tragedies, local news to international headlines, sport events, natural disasters, General Election and many more.
3 THS Penang Walk Hunts were organized in April, August and December, with the theme Down Memory Lane 2013.

The timing of the 3 legs was evenly spread out, with Leg 1 mainly focused on the events during Jan-Apr; while Leg 2 and Leg 3 highlight issues during Apr-Aug and Aug-Dec respectively.
