KL Fabulous Food Hunt winners tell Teresa Yong- Leong about their experiences

THE mission: Gobble whatever was placed in front of them and quickly.
The 115 teams who gathered at Central Market, Kuala Lumpur, for the Life & Times Travel KL Fabulous Food Hunt 2012 on Saturday were raring to go.
Each team had four members and all were dressed in red T-shirts. Flagged off by NST managing editor Datuk Nuraina Samad at 9.45am, the teams had to complete nine tasks and get three treasures.
By 3.30pm, the lucky draws and prize presentation were being held. Apart from cash prizes (ranging from RM200 to RM5,000) for the first 20 teams, there were many other prizes.
Prizes were given away by NSTP group managing editor Datuk Abdul Jalil Hamid, Ministry of Tourism (FT Office) director Yuhaini Yusoff, Best Western Premier Dua Sentral resident manager Celia Kam and Life & Times (Travel) editor Putri Zanina.
Contestants thought the event was a riot of fun and hoped it would be back next year.
FIRST PRIZE: TIGER 1
Mazlan Rasheed had been on a carbo-free diet for the past six months but he was more than happy to break that regime on Saturday to wolf down two servings of nasi lemak with eggs.
His team, Tiger 1, went home RM5,000 richer.
Coming together at the last minute, this team from Seremban comprised Mazlan, 37, Rezal Mohamad Khalil, 37, Muhamad Hafiz Muhd Nor, 26, and Faiz Faudzi, 25.
Mazlan said they were happy to pool their ideas to come up with the winning strategy and divided themselves into “who would eat what”.
“We spent time planning our strategy. We would start at the furthest restaurant and work our way back to the finishing point. It worked out well and eating was not a problem as all of us loved to eat,” said Mazlan with a huge grin.
“I had skipped eating carbohydrates for the past six months. But I was happy to eat my share of the two nasi lemak servings for the food hunt. They tasted great,” said a happy Mazlan.
They had thought they were losing as they had difficulty getting a taxi to Restoran Wahab and back. But at Fierce Curry House in Bangsar, they realised that they were in fourth place and their hopes were revived.
“When we checked in at Best Western, we could not believe that we were the first. We screamed for joy,” he added.
They attributed their success to cooperation and strategy. They also bought Touch N Go cards to speed up travelling at LRT stations. Keeping an open mind and being calm and relaxed helped, they all agree.

These four guys considered themselves the underdog team as they hardly knew one another. They all worked in KL but they came from Penang, Perak and Selangor.
Nevertheless, Lin Wei Nyin, 28, Lau Sai Yew, 35, Loi Teik Ooi and Julian Lim Chu Heing, 31, had no problems clicking and quickly warmed up to the challenges ahead.
“We had no time to eat and that was good. So we ate all the fabulous food along the way,” said Lin.
They too planned their route well and each ate the food they enjoyed most. They hadn’t been to any of the restaurants before and getting around was the biggest challenge.
But they promised they would be back with their friends and families to enjoy what they had tried. Quadruple L took home RM3,000.
THIRD PRIZE: PENANG LAKSA

This team came all the way from Penang to take part in the event. Team leader Liong Chian Min and his friends, Chin Kar Peng, Yeoh Ban Lye and Sin Yoong Leong came by car and bus for the event.
One drove down earlier as he had some matters to attend to in KL while the rest came by bus at various times due to work schedules. The last one reached KL at midnight on Saturday and had only two hours’ sleep before the food hunt.
Liong said they enjoyed taking part in treasure hunts and didn’t mind the long drive. As they were not familiar with KL, they did some general research on the Internet to get a good idea.
They thought the variety of food chosen was good and they thoroughly enjoyed each and every one despite the time factor.
“Our strategy was to not eat anything before the event so that we would be hungry enough to eat. We were right as we stuffed ourselves without much effort,” said Liong.
They were happy with their third placing and pocketed RM1,500.
Liong runs a treasure hunt blog, huntnewsnetwork and promotes and highlights treasure hunts in the country. He is a committee member of the northern chapter of Treasure Hunt Society Of Malaysia which has 100 members nationwide.
“We conduct clinics and run simple RM10 treasure hunts to promote the activity. We help participants sharpen their skills so that they will enjoy themselves more,” he added.

Chew, chomp, find, win!
They came from all walks of life with one goal in mind: To eat their way to a win.
IMAGINE the chaos when hundreds of people throng your eatery — all at the same time! This was what happened last Saturday when nine eateries in Kuala Lumpur were swarmed by a sea of red “customers” looking for something to eat.
Malaysians and food are a potent combination and can turn havoc especially when they are eating their way to the finishing line.
As early as 8am, 460 contestants from all walks of life and wearing red T-shirts gathered at Central Market for the KL Fabulous Food Hunt 2012.
From the word go by New Straits Times managing editor Datuk Nuraina Samad, they fanned out in all directions to look for answers to the first task.
Teams had to get all–correct answers for a photo hunt to get the food hunt passport which contained 12 tasks — nine eating tasks and three treasures.
The nine eating tasks were at nine selected joints, all scattered in Kuala Lumpur. Teams had to strategise their route to be the fastest to arrive at the finishing line in Best Western Premier Dua Sentral Hotel.
At each checkpoint, only one person from each team was required to complete the task and the team would receive a stamp on its passport.
Then it’s off to the next checkpoint, via public transport (train, bus or taxi). They were not allowed to use their own mode of transport or they would be disqualified.
The treasures were a specially designed coupon published in New Straits Times, a team photo in a moving LRT train and a team photo at designated points in LRT Taman Melati Station.
There was drama as some contestants gave up but there was triumph as well.
After hours of chomping, munching, swallowing, gulping and braving the traffic, the first team arrived at the final pit stop in the cosy ambience of Best Western Dua Sentral Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, in just two hours 40 minutes, way ahead of the organisers’ estimated time of four hours.
As expected, it was a mixed bag of emotion for the food hunters. Just as there were triumph and joy to be had, there were also disappointment and anguish to be swallowed.
THE FIRST COURSE
The first course served was three pieces of roti canai and a teh tarik at Restoran Annexe (Nasi Kandar) in Central Market. Seated in two rows, 14 hunters began their chomping to noisy cheering from team members.
Some took only five minutes to wolf down the roti canai but others, especially the girls, made laborious progress.
As the queue got longer, the workers too felt the heat as they rushed about to get the food for the participants. What a sight!
By 11.15am, most of the teams had moved on to the next restaurant of their choice.
GLORIOUS SATAY FARE
Satay being so popular, this task was like a welcomed break. If they had to struggle with the roti canai earlier, the scene at Sate Kajang Haji Samuri in Taman Melati was quite the opposite. You can tell that Malaysians love the skewered and grilled meat, served with spicy peanut sauce.
It was all touch and go. Hunters seemed to “drop in” and leave in no time at all. One woman was spotted holding a stick of satay in one hand and the peanut sauce bowl in the other. She wiped the sauce around the bowl with her satay. She was definitely having a ball.
“I love satay. I wish there was more!” she said as she finished her last stick with glee.
DON’T CHICKEN OUT!
At Kedai Makan Upin & Ipin, Taman Melati, the food hunters were in for another treat—chicken rice. Watching them enjoy the dish was a treat in itself. While some ate with fork and spoon, others preferred using their hands.
As more came into the shop, things started to get more competitive, especially one guy who, probably feeling threatened, gobbled up his share in record-breaking time!
His team cheered as he finished the last grain of rice and slowly drank the accompanying beverage.
LETTING OFF STEAM
There were three tasks in Taman Melati. The third was probably the easiest. Hunters had to eat four sticks of lok-lok (steamboat skewers) at a food truck.
Customer usually take their time to enjoy lok-lok but not the hunters who merely dipped their skewers in the boiling water and ate without waiting for the food to be cooked properly.
SWALLOWING MEE AND SLURPING CENDOL
Restoran Wahab in Rampai Business Park, famous for its cendol, was a hive of activity. Hunters alighted from taxis to join a long queue in front of the restaurant.
Quadruple L was the first team to check in at 11am and they made short work of the mee rebus and cendol.
Watching Tanesh Kumar of Donut Rangers was fascinating. His team members urged him to “just swallow the mee and leave the lime alone! Slurp down the cendol”.
Then it was a mad rush to find a taxi to go to their next destination. This was a huge problem as there were few taxis around.
It was easy to get one from Wangsa Maju LRT station to Restoran Wahab but leaving was another matter. Some teams had to walk a distance.
DOUBLE PORTION OF SPICE
On the list of 10 famous nasi lemak outlets in Kuala Lumpur, RA Nasi Lemak in Jalan Raja Abdullah Kg Baru offers a variety of side dishes such as sambal, curry chicken, beef rendang, lung, prawn, squid, fried egg and more.
But for the food hunt, the stall (located across Sungai Kelang from the Dang Wangi LRT Station) had prepared two portions of nasi lemak with two hard-boiled eggs and lots of sambal as well as a glass of iced tea.
The men didn’t have any trouble with the portion served but it proved too heavy for the women.
Most took less than 10 minutes to finish the meal but the sambal was really hot and many were sweating as they ate.
One woman who was not used to such hot food was sweating as she struggled to finish the food. Another contestant actually threw up as he couldn’t take egg yolk!
With all the cheering by team members, the hunt took on a festive air.
BITE INTO BITTER
Ikan Bakar and Nasi Campur Norizan in Jalan Raja Muda Musa, Kampung Baru, was where the game got tense. The eatery is famous for nasi campur (rice with dishes) and its enticing grilled fish.
No wonder the hunters were excited as they made their way there. But what they didn’t know was that there would be a twist and it was brutal!
Besides the signature rice with soup and the usual ulam (salad) with sambal belacan, there was a secret ingredient — jering!
Though this was familiar to those who love ulam, jering was a bit too much to swallow for most hunters who went “ooh” and “aah” as soon as they saw it.
For the uninitiated, jering is bitter and the taste stays on your tongue for hours. But the hunters had no choice but to chew, chomp and swallow.
Many lost the battle after struggling with the sharp stinging bean but some walked away, proud to have earned the stamp on their passport.
FIERCE VEGE
Since Fierce Curry House in Jalan Kemuja, Bangsar, offered a short window from 12.30pm to 3pm, most hunters made it their last checkpoint.
The restaurant is known for its lobster biryani cooked in a pot sealed with pastry. However what the hunters got was a typical Indian vegetarian rice set.
Sounded easy right? No, not after eight restaurants in just a couple of hours!
By the time the hunters arrived, they were stuffed. But one of their team had to come forward in order to get the crucial last stamp.
This was the most critical challenge because the clock was ticking and outside, dark clouds were gathering. Like it or not, they had to eat quickly or be caught in the rain.
Exhausted and totally stressed out, one hunter who had completed six out of nine eating challenges “flooded” his banana leaf platter with what he had been eating earlier.
LAST SUPPER
All’s well that ends well. Right before the teams could check in at the finishing line on Level 6 of the newly opened Best Western Premier Dua Sentral Hotel, they had to complete one final task.
But finishing a bowl of fruit rojak at the hotel’s all day spicy dining restaurant, Kembali, on the ground floor, was no easy task as there was no water available to help wash it down.
Some teams managed rather nicely but there were others who thought the rojak too hot to swallow.

While in Taman Melati, they were required to eat 10 sticks of satay at Sate Kajang Hj Samuri; a nasi ayam set and mango ice at Kedai Makan Upin dan Ipin; and lok-lok (food skewered on sticks) served from a food truck.
The participants then proceeded to consumed a bowl of tasty cendol and a plate of mee rebus at Wahab's Restaurant in Rampai Business Park.
In Kampung Baru, the foodies were required to eat two portions of nasi lemak with two hard-boiled eggs, washed down with a cold teh-O at R.A. Nasi Lemak, touted to be the best place for nasi lemak in the city. The stall is by the roadside, close to Dang Wangi LRT station.

The eating spree continued with the participants tucking into a plate of rice with fried fish, ulam raja, jering, soup and iced water at the well-known Nasi Campur Norizan.
The teams then made their way to Fierce Curry House in Jalan Kemuja, Bangsar, where they had to finished a plate of vegetarian rice before making their way to Best Western Dua Sentral Hotel for a bowl of spicy fruit rojak as their final challenge.
At 12.41pm, a group of friends, comprising entrepreneurs Mazlan Rasheed and Rezal Mohamad Khalil; teacher Muhamad Hafiz Mohd Nor; and chartered accountant Faiz Faudzi emerged as the grand prize winner as they were the first to arrived at the final checkpoint.
Calling their team Tiger 1, the captain, Hafiz, said they did not expect to win as they had only joined the hunt for fun.
"We were not motivated by the prizes because we just want to have fun while discovering the good eateries in the city," he said.
Sharing the secret of their success, he said the team had gone to Taman Melati first.
"Instead of waiting for our turn at the roti canai challenge, we made our way to Taman Melati as it was the furthest eatery.

"We swallowed everything without chewing to save time. The strategy seemed to have paid off," said Hafiz. The team won RM5,000.
The second placed went to Team Quadruple L, which arrived just 30 seconds later than Tiger 1. It walked away with RM3,000.
Lin Wei Nyin, Lau Sai Yew, Loi Teik Ooi and Julian Lim Chu Heing of Team Quadruple L, said they, too, just gulped down the food.
"We just swallowed everything and proceeded to the next challenge, one after another," said Lin, adding that the group is going to re-visit all the eateries in the hunt.
The third prize of RM1,500 was won by team Penang Laksa. Besides the top three winners, 17 other teams also walked away with cash prizes.
There was also a lucky draw, with prizes worth up to RM30,000. Engineer Khairul Azhar Shahril, 29, won a trip to Bali.
Khairul, of team Food Busters which finished at the 41th place, said he will bring his wife Tengku Farah Petri Tengku Mahmood to Bali.
"It will be a sort of second honeymoon for us," he said, adding that his team will come back again for next year's food hunt.

Feasting through the city
KUALA LUMPUR: MORE than 460 hungry foodies roamed the streets of Kuala Lumpur yesterday in search of the city's tastiest eateries under the KL Fabulous Food Hunt 2012.
With their eyes on the cash prizes and holiday trips, team Tiger 1 went through all eateries' checkpoints and came out as the day's biggest winner.
Entrepreneurs Mazlan Rasheed and Rezal Mahmood Khalil, teacher Mohamad Hafiz Mohamad Nor and chartered accountant Faiz Faudzi said their strategy was to go to the furthest eatery first before the ones nearest.
"We had a lot of fun yesterday, running and eating all through the city. We managed to see many sides of KL we rarely see," said team captain Hafiz. Team Tiger 1, who completed all challenges and had the most correct answers, won RM5,000.
Second-placed Team Quadruple L, which took home RM3,000, said their strategy of "swallowing" instead of "eating" pulled them through, though they were just 30 seconds short from coming in first.
Third prize winner, Penang Laksa, came all the way from the island and its captain, Liong Chian Min said the team promised to make a comeback next year. They walked away with RM1,500.
Lucky participants also took home plane tickets, holiday packages and buffet dinners at luxury hotels from a lucky draw session.
Fabulous Food Hunt was organised by Life & Times Travel in collaboration with the Kuala Lumpur Tourism Ministry office and event management company Red Adventure.

Life & Times Travel KL Fabulous Food Hunt 2012 really lived up to its name. It was a non-stop eating hunt right from the word Go; with more than 460 participants well fed with gourmet of foods.
You name it:- roti canai, nasi ulam, nasi lemak, sate, cendol, mee rebus, steamboat, rojak, nasi ayam and banana leaf rice.
There was certainly no complaint of lack of food; judging by the expression of the hunters in action below.

GET set for the Life&Times Travel KL Fabulous Food Hunt 2012 this Saturday. It will be a sizzling race and the winner will bag RM5,000 and lots of other goodies.
Though the event is just around the corner, more sponsors have come forward, including Maybank and World Of Sports. Maybank is giving RM5,000 cash to help the organisers run the event. Its corporate affairs assistant vice president Mazlan Rasheed said the contribution is for a good cause and the bank is very honoured to be one of the sponsors.
World Of Sports marketing communication manager Joachim Heng said the race is in line with its selling direction. “Our objective has always been to provide good quality performance gear and this complements the event well. At the same time, we hope to contribute to the participants as much as we can,” he said.
Currently, World Of Sports and World Of Outdoors have 26 stores nationwide, including in Sabah and Sarawak, which sells sports products such as attire, footwear and sports accessories from over 20 global brands from Europe, the United States and Japan such as Mizuno, Columbia, Solomon and Teva.
Next month, they will open Urban Adventure, a new oufit that will have wall-climbing facilities, at MidValley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur.
Organised in collaboration with Tourism Ministry’s Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Office and event management company Red Adventure, the KL Fabulous Food Hunt is part of the Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Festival from October to December.
Participants will race on foot or by public transport to complete challenging food-related tasks at various checkpoints and eateries in Kuala Lumpur.

Hotel clinches deal as food hunt venue

THE three-month-old Best Western Premier Dua Sentral is ready to welcome the 400 participants of the Life&Times Travel KL Fabulous Food Hunt 2012 on Nov 3. It is the official venue for the event.
Its resident manager Celia Kam said the hotel is delighted to be one of the sponsors and that “we are very anxious and at the same time, very happy to take part in this fun race.”
The hotel clinched the deal with the organiser, New Straits Times’ Travel Desk, to become the main venue for the last checkpoint of the race as well as the prize giving ceremony which will take place at the pool area on level 6.
“This will be a great venue as the infinity pool area has a stunning panoramic view of the Kuala Lumpur skyscrapers,” Kam added.
The hotel will also serve drinks and finger foods for all participants and offer a few free-stay vouchers for lucky draw winners.

CASH prizes totalling RM14,300 await the top 20 winners at the KL Fabulous Food Hunt 2012, a food race that meets the demands of gourmands and adrenaline junkies.
The team that can eat the fastest and the most and have the most correct answers and complete all challenges in the shortest possible time will win RM5,000.The second and third prizes are RM3,000 and RM1,500 respectively.
Fourth and fifth prize winners will collect RM800 and RM500 respectively while winners from sixth to 10th placing will receive RM300. Winners from the 11th to 20th placing will receive RM200 each.
“While the food and tasks will make the hunt exciting and fun, the attractive cash prizes will motivate hunters to race harder and faster. This is the reason why we decided to increase the stakes,” says Yuhaini Yusoff, director of Tourism Ministry Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Office. Last year’s event only offered a total of RM6,500 for the top 15 teams, with RM3,500 for the first prize winner.
Organised by Life & Times Travel in collaboration with Tourism Ministry’s Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Office and event management company Red Adventure, the food hunt will be held on Nov 3 in Kuala Lumpur.
It is part of the Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Festival which is held annually from October to December.

Test your physical and mental endurance at the upcoming KL Fabulous Food Hunt 2012

ON your mark, get set and ... eat! But a good appetite is not the key at the KL Fabulous Food Hunt 2012 as the physical and mental stamina of participants will be tested when they scour the city streets in search of famed fare.
The specially-designed food race that meets the demands of gourmands and adrenaline junkies, will be held on Nov 3 in Kuala Lumpur.
“Hunters” will set off from Central Market on foot or public transport to complete challenging tasks at various check points, including eateries.
“Since it will be bigger, this second edition will be tougher with more checkpoints and challenging tasks,” says Yuhaini Yusoff, director at Tourism Ministry Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Office.
This year’s event is expected to attract 100 teams compared to last year’s 20.
“Each team should have at least three members. However, participants are expected to exercise caution as the tasks will be quite challenging,” says Narimah Samat of Red Adventure Sdn Bhd which is tasked with designing the route and challenge.
Hunters not only get a chance to enjoy great food and scenery, but they also stand a chance to win cash prizes totalling RM14,300. There will also be attractive lucky draw prizes worth RM30,000 plus a goodie bag for each hunter.
“It’ll be an exciting event especially for NST readers, in particular those who follow the Life & Times Travel section,” says Life & Times Travel editor Putri Zanina Megat Zainuddin. “It’s timed to co-incide with the annual Tourism Ministry’s Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Festival from October to December.”
