KLANG: In line with its corporate social responsibility (CSR), Pantai Hospital Klang recently organised a charity treasure hunt for the Klang community.

All proceeds from the event, which totalled RM5,000, were channelled to the Down Syndrome and Hyper Active Children Care Centre.

Themed The Trail of Hope, the treasure hunt aims to educate the public in how to take care of children with Down Syndrome and hyperactivity disorder.

The hot and humid weather in Klang did not stop 80 energetic participants from all ages and walks of life from taking part in this charity event.

Participants in groups of four drove in cars to tackle quizzes related to Klang's history and local culture.

First-prize winner Lim Ming Yang, 29, who wore a colourful garland around her neck said: "My team members were excited when we found out about the treasure hunt. We registered immediately.

"During the treasure hunt, we had several heated discussions. However, teamwork and patience helped us with the challenges.

"Of course, our main motivation was to help Down Syndrome and hyperactive children in Klang."

Pantai Hospital Klang chief operating officer Maryati Legori Ibrahim, who greeted participants before the start of the hunt, said: "We are excited to host the inaugural charity treasure hunt, and hope this will be a platform to support many other social causes.

"As a private community healthcare provider for more than three decades, it is our responsibility to do our bit and give back to the community.

"Our contributions to the community may seem small, but our intention has always been to make a greater positive difference.

"As our tagline, Caring from The Heart, declares we will continue to initiate similar outreach programmes in the future."

According to Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)'s Human Genome Centre and Genetic Clinic, the incidence of Down Syndrome among children in Malaysia is one for every 950 births.

It is a genetic disorder caused by an extra chromosome, either in the egg or sperm, during conception.

But until today, the misconception persists that Down Syndrome is related to race, religion or socio-economic status.

It is a chromosomal disorder, and children with such conditions need special care, love and support.

"Through Pantai Hospital Klang's The Trail of Hope charity treasure hunt, the hospital aims to correct this misunderstanding and educate others," said Maryati.
