Extracted from New Sunday Times (15th July 2012)
Bigger and better next year
LOOKING AHEAD: A bigger motor hunt with more prizes can be expected for 2013

KUALA LUMPUR: THE overwhelming response from readers and members of the public for the inaugural New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2012 last Sunday has given an impetus to the newspaper to make the hunt an annual affair.

And it will be "bigger and better", as New Straits Times Press Bhd group managing editor Abdul Jalil Hamid had promised during the prize presentation ceremony.

Many, if not most, contestants also vowed to return next year to test their skills and try their luck again, impressed as they were by the prize pool, which, thanks to the generosity of sponsors, was hailed as one of the most luxurious for such hunts.

Although it was the newspaper's first-ever motor hunt, it attracted 231 teams from all over the country, with more than 900 contestants.

Participants were flagged off from the NSTP Bhd headquarters in Jalan Riong, Bangsar, at 8am, and were sent off to various parts of Klang Valley in search of answers to some tricky riddles.

The hunt ended at Holiday Villa Subang in Subang Jaya, the venue sponsor for the hunt. Purple Antz was the designated clerk of course.

There were three categories to the hunt -- beginner, regular and media/sponsors.

The winning team of each category took home RM5,000, with first and second runners-up bagging RM3,000 and RM1,500 respectively.

The grand prize winner took home a Volkswagen Polo Sedan worth about RM100,000. The winner was selected via a draw among the three winning teams.

There were also many lucky draw prizes, ranging from smart phones to luxurious hotel stays, flight tickets to Osaka, Japan and Sydney, Australia, and more.

The sponsors for the hunt were BlackBerry smartphones developer RIM (Research in Motion Malaysia Sdn Bhd), Felda Holdings, AirAsia X Sdn Bhd, Star Cruises, Sime Darby, Tesco, Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd, Kingston, LG Electronics Malaysia, Canon Malaysia, Epson, Lactacyd, Julie's Biscuits, Permodalan Nasional Bhd, Permanis Sandilands Sdn Bhd, Celcom, Maybank, and TomTom, supplier of in-car location and navigation products and services.

Petronas was the official fuel sponsor, while other major hotel sponsors were Best Western Premier Dua Sentral, Philea Resort and Spa in Malacca, Hyatt Regency Kuantan Resort, A' Famosa Resort and Datai, Langkawi.

Other hotels, which sponsored rooms, food and beverage vouchers and merchandise, were Hard Rock Hotel Penang, G Hotel Penang, Double Tree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur, Sunway Putra Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Impiana KLCC Hotel, Federal Hotels International, Putrajaya Marriott Hotel and Spa, Holiday Villa Hotels and Resorts and One World Hotel.

To many, the memorable event wasn't just a motor hunt, but also a family day.

But apart from that, it was also a day for charity. The items acquired by hunters as "treasures" throughout the hunt -- mainly foodstuff and necessity items worth some RM2,500 -- were donated to Rumah Bakti Al-Kausar in Bandar Baru Bangi.

"This is so unexpected. I don't know what we're going to do with this yet.

"Maybe we'll take it for a spin first and then decide."

With the overwhelming response from the public, NSTP group managing editor Abdul Jalil Hamid promised that the inaugural hunt would be turned into a yearly affair.

"Next year, we will make it better and bigger," he said to cheers from the floor during the prize presentation ceremony.

Besides getting the thrill of the hunt, participants also took part in charity, as the multitude of treasures they "hunted down" that were stowed in various locations throughout the route -- mostly necessities and food items -- were donated to Rumah Bakti Al Kausar of Bandar Baru Bangi.

Hi Gavin,

The hunt rules stated that each participant must fill up the ORIGINAL registration form ONLY.

So far, NST hasn't published any such downloadable form. With this original form appearing almost daily in NST papers, the hunters are probably expected to get a copy of NST for the form.

Congrats to the winners. However, i am dissapointed with the media first prize winner as the hunter Ramlan is the husband of New Sunday Times editor Chok Suat Ling WHO is the organiser. He should not be allowed to compete in the hunt knowing that his wife sits in NST Motor Hunt committee. Did he win on his own merit?

Ramlan wins on his own? That would be the day lah...
Please check out the huntmaster Purple Ant's "help" to the winners...those who take part knew what went down lah...that explains why the hunt fee has not been released yet...

I heard sime darby team scored the highest points but was denied a podium finish not even in the top 5!

Hi all Anonymous,

Nothing wrong with wife organizer, husband champ; if the question-setting independently set by a reputable COC with integrity.

As long as no soalan bocor, husband, uncle, neighbour etc can win on their own merit.

Are you implying COC Purple Antz of 'helping' certain winners to bag the prizes? That seems a rather strong accusation. Unless you have seen it or evidence of such malpractice, don't simply spread such rumour!

Anonymous said...

like that laaa......where can wife be the organizer and hubby takes part......sure there will be a confict of interest

i see the winner media/sponsor group rilek rilek only during hunt....confident 100%

Wah... so many chats since I last logged in this morning.

I took down the score during result time; Media champion 94; second 90 and third 85.

Bystander said...

I am not COC nor Ramlan; just a hunter, with independent view.

I joined Purple Antz hunts a couple of times b4; they are not those half-baked dodgy COC, who endorses collaboration or collaborates with 'participants' to win prizes.

If wife sets Q, and husband wins, then yes... it'll be a conflict of interest!

But if COC and organizer are separate parties, and the questions are strictly P&C within COC, then I don't see a problem if other NST staff are allowed to join Media category.

alamak sudah jadi panas la sunday times hunt ni........tapi seelok elok nya yg sisuami tu jgn la masuk hunt....lihat apa sudah jadi...bkn la nak kata...kan org dah cakap...mesti ada komplot ni

Plse explain lah...how a regular media hunter who won so many hunts with other coc...but did not has a placing this time...i am talking abt one Kereta Buruk...a well-known media hunter but no placing in a hunt organised by a wife in which her husband won....sounds fishy lah...stinks!!

Anonymous said...

eerrmmmmm win or lose is part of the game......sometimes you win sometimes you lose..... just accept it....nothing to worry... but we hunters knows very well among us........its just that somebody doesnt know when to take part and when not to take part.As i heard the team from tv3 " potong kat corner" lodge a complain why all of a sudden their team was put under regular when they are in the media....after sorting back by coc they are at the same point with the winner of media but lose on countback...and i heard that the coc paid them with their own money...sometimes hunt sucks...thats it...a well known coc to make that kind of mistake or was it on purpose....god knows!!!

Anonymous said...

Interestingly, the regular hunters have not said a word at all about all this. Had a look at their questions, goodness, of a completely different level, and they had a shorter time? Fight fair and square, some just find a loophole to go into the media category, if you have hunted often enough, go fight it out with the regulars, like some teams did, they owned up, well done. I look up to the regular hunters, they showed great sportsmanship in this! Congrats Blog owner Chian Min on your well deserved win!

Anonymous said...

A well-known coc? My foot lah...

Bystander said...

It is unfair to accuse fishy hunt result, just coz one Kereta Buruk didn't win anythg during the hunt.

Maybe they were not used to this COC style, or they made careless mistakes or they were not on form etc. Put it simply, if they didn't do well, they don't win!

But if their score is higher than the top 5 winners in Media & they still didn't win, then yes ... I agree that maybe something is not right!

i think the category shud be master n nonmaster as opposed to regular n beginner as the questions 4 regular were really crazy..
at least allow a mix team ie max 2 nonbeginner to join beginner la..

btw.. could someone get the captains to update their list.. how come they include top 10 winners of ptrjy hunt a.k.a. amazing race which tagline is 'anyone can win' (i.e. no need killer huntg skills also can win'..

from 'regular hunter' who fed up trying to beat master as unable to join beginner bcoz the stupid non beginner's list... so to be ex-hunter unless name removed from said list..

Anonymous said...

dunno la.. but nst team always did well when they join purple antz hunts..
mebbe they only join purple antz hunts????

I was in Penang to clerk a Hunt. Otherwise I would have entered for the fun of it. Nevertheless, I received many feedbacks from some Hunters who had participated.
1. A Media Team that was flagged-off under Media Category ended up being classified as Beginners Category. And this team scored enough points to be placed joint 1st with the Winner of the Media Category
2. Another Media Team (again flagged-off under Media Category) ended-up without being in any Category at all. And this Team also scored high points to be amongst the winners of the Media category.
3. Now, why all these had happened under Media category. Was it to facilitate the eventual winner from NST which as we all know, one of the members is either a Committee Member of the Hunt or if not, the wife definitely is. It surely does raise questions.
4. I also found out that there Beginners who should not be in the Beginners category if we are to follow the rules of Non-Beginners under the Trailblazer List. These Beginners had won or had been on podium finishes in Open Hunts but were not listed in the Trailblazers Non-Beginners list. Why? Because Trailblazer does not monitor and obtain results of all Open Hunts in the country.
5. Next is the question of why only very few Teams participated as Regulars. Reason is obvious. Many of the Non-Beginners had limited Hunting experience but had to compete as Regulars through the classification of Trailblazer. Imagine if you are on the podium for a Beginner Hunt (although this may be your 3rd Hunt), you are immediately classified as Non-Beginners and had to compete with other Regulars with more Hunts under their belts. Worst still, you are now in the same category as the Masters who have had years of Hunting experience. So this Trailblazers’ Regulars opted not to participate. Right decision considering prizes were only for the Top 5 and would be grabbed by the Masters

this comments should't arise if not for someone who do not have the integrity ....honesty...but do have the greediness to grab anything that comes. He should think about that first before participating. Knowing very well that his wife is the chairperson of the hunt doesn't he think that complication could arise if he participate and won the hunt.
well lot of effort have being put to make the hunt a hunt of the year with great prizes being
awarded.....but sad to say.....its being marred by just one fella.
Don't blame the hunters when they they felt that they were being cheated by the conspiracy....who wouldn't think it that way.
Anyway let it be a lesson for the organizer if they want to hold it again next year....happy hunting

Just FYI...rather a week before the hunt "the husband and wife" teamed up with a non-regular (3 participants only) and won the bank islam hunt to kuantan...there were about 2 tough questions but this team was like kacang only to them and arrived in kuantan an hour before the otherss came in...they were the first and earliest...considering there were lots of tasks along the way...

Some of the participants suspected there was the "fourth" participant...alto unofficially...and since they won d first prize, the fourth prize could very well go to the fourth but unregistered participant lah...even the coc suspected something amiss...but nobody make a bid deal lah out of it...knowing this team had such experience before lah...again nobody wants to make a fuss out of it...ppl know but they just "close one eye" lah!!!

But this time...these fellas have gone a bit far lah...

to the Nst organizers. since this is a public hunt with much publicity, please publish the official results of the hunt in the newspapers after all the complaints on positions etc. prizes also should be adjusted accordingly

Mistakes happen in hunt.. So whats the big deal.

Bystander said...

There is a difference between genuine error and deliberate collaboration.

To accuse conspiracy, just because ‘husband’ team managed 94 points, look a bit baseless.
If ‘husband’ wants to pakat & win, why stop at 94, since it’s still beatable? He should go for 100.

Think about it.

Getting 94 points is highly possible; as all top 10 teams in beginner category oso got 94 and above. Does that mean all top 10 teams also pakat?

For the case of few Media teams missing, I believe that this could be an accidental error from COC.

Why would COC purposedly miss them, so that ‘husband’ team can win; only later for COC having to use his own money to pay the corrected winner?

I have seen other well-known COCs making such mistakes, but couldn’t bother to compensate the unfortunate parties.

COC just like us, are humans too and not error-free. What is important is how they rectify the mistakes after that.

Good COC will stand up, admit error, compensate & move on!

I dont see the purpose of the media category in the first place. Its a very bias category.

There are too few teams participating in the media category and most of them have sufficient hunt experience to be in the regular or master or non beginner or non novice category. Heck some of them have hunted longer than me. And logically given the smaller number of participating teams - its always the same few teams that win top honours earning them similar prizes as the other categories.

Its a stupid category but due to sufficient sponsorship and backing of the organisers - I have no say. Don't think most of us have unless COCs tell the organisers to eff off, which for commercial reasons wont happen. So why bitch?

I dont understand why people bitch so much after the event. If you must at least show your name. So that the powers that be (not sure who) can address each comment constructively.

The argument of what is beginner and what is not will never end. I guess each COC has genuinely tried to be as fair as possible - but lets face it.. shit happens.

I think PA did a great job overall last Sunday... hopefully these things can be ironed out in time to come. its not an easy job to run through 900 names to ensure they dont fall in any such list. It is also a difficult task to ensure that names on any list should be maintained or be removed. Till then, I guess we have to respect the best judgement of the COC as I truly believe there was no malicious intent when resorting one team from a category to the next.

The key message is - we dont have to agree with the judgement - but we must learn to respect it.

kudos to the winners of ALL THREE categories.

I did receive a feedback too. This kind of situation i.e. "did raise question(s)" had also occurred in the MPPD hunt held in end of March this year. The poster of the hunt did clearly state for "Non-Master only", but apparently it turned out that the known Master (the name is clearly listed in both of the list- the TOS as well as Trailblazer) had become the Champion. To make things even being "qestionable", the Champion seems to be known by the CoC very well (a team mate sometimes). Ironically, the MC of that day did post a comment here, questioning about the some thing- hahahahaha......this is definitely raise a question!

Hi Chian Min!

*waves to CM all the way from KL*

Sorry to intrude on your blog, but just would like to say a few things.

Wow, thinks my team just had a special mention here for the MPPD Hunt :) Hi Annonymous, am Linda.

Let me see, for the MPPD Hunt, I hunted with fellow team mates Asri, Mazri and Honey, and yes, we won the hunt.

Now, as for your statement of one (or many of us) are in the TOS list, please redo your homework dear, there is no Linda or Asri or Mazri or Honey listed there. Which would mean no, we are not masters. Have we hunted before? Oh of course, yes, many times, so are we regular hunters, oh yes we are, and is our name in the Traiilblazers list? Yes we are.

Interestingly enough, you picked on the MPPD Hunt, which was a non-master hunt, but we also participated in Purple Antz GBS Non-Master hunt too, not the same?

The top 3 winners of the Non-masters GBS hunt are all regular hunters, you can be assured we participated in the right NST Category, but no, all of our names are not in the TOS Masters list :) Go check. I just did, nope, our name still isnt there.

As for the CoC being our team mate, oh yes, at times we do hunt together, but regular hunters who are civic conscious don't cheat, the thrill in joining the hunt, is to be able to outdo the CoC, whether he is a friend or not, i've been team mates with other CoC's too, same thing, it's the thirst of outdoing the CoC that keeps us going.

As such, my conscience is clear dear, and i dont hide behind anonymous, we're all adults here, am sure we can take a few criticms.

Sorry for taking so much space CM!

Good day to all!

Hi Anonymous,
I am Hagi Suhaimi - the CoC (together with Kheirul Naib) for the MPPD Hunt, which is for Non-Masters, which is those not listed under TOS Hall of Fame List. We never said those under Trailblazer Non-Beginners List are Masters or not eligible to participate. As a matter of fact we had invited other Regulars including non-Malays Regulars to participate but somehow none of them could make it.
And Yes, Linda, Mazri and Asri do join me and Kheirul for Hunts, but that doesn't mean we collaborate to make them winners.
So my dear Anonymous, please check your facts. And like all gentlemen, I wrote this comment and the previous comments using my true identity - not Anonymous - whoever you are.
Yes, for the NST Hunt I must admit that it was tough for PA handling more than 200 teams. I would find it tough too.
But to make mistakes involving mostly media Teams, do raised some questions. How can a Media Team was shown as coming in at No 10 under Beginners category when I was told the Competition Numbers will immediately identify that it is a media team. And how come another media team not listed at all when their scores are high enough to be placed amongst the Top 5 of the Media category.
Last week I clerked a Hunt to Penang and guess what, the winner of the Media/Sponsor category was Sallehuddin & Co from TV3. And yes, Salleh had also at one Hunt teamed up with me for a Hunt. So, Anonymous, you are again going to tell me that I collaborate with Salleh to make them winners.
Now back to NST Hunt, the Media Team that was supposed to be tied with the winning Team from NST was said to lose on Questions countback. How does the countback work when they went to different sectors.
Now Anonymous, as a gentleman, can you reveal your name.

just want to give my two cents opinion...me a long time hunter, win some never win almost everytime. hahaha.
we can see that almost everytime, its the same group going on stage to grab the prizes, open or media. think its time COC's introduce some sort of handicap system. give the rest of us non masters the chance also lah.

Berita gempar! Terbongkar rahsia yg team Sime Darby sebagai sponsor yg masuk NST Hunt ni dgn percuma tapi syaratnya semua team member mestilah employees of Sime Darby ada seorang team members yg bukan employees of Sime Darby. Patutlah disqualify dia korang ni kan? Malukan nama baik Sime Darby aje. Kalo saya bos kat Sime Darby terus pecat ketiga tiga korang ni! Patutlah team saya kat media kategori terlepas satu tempat hadiah kerana korang penipu ni!! Geram hati saya ni!

Wah ..last time got Master Hall of Fame list, now got Non-Beginners list, next time maybe must have Media list. If name not there, cannot qualify to join as Media!

Or else, nanti orang geram!

I am one of the beginners.

I read with amusement how some of you more experienced Media teams whined about being unfairly placed in the 'Beginner' group.

If you are placed in Regular category, I can understand you cant compete with the masters.

Surely you guys can handle the competition with the Beginners, right?

But all I see, you moaned about who cant qualify in Media category; why you are unfairly treated in Media group, why you lose money bla bla bla

I dont see Masters complaining about their crazy questions; i dont see the 200 beginner teams complaining about the intense competition in their group.

My utmost respect to these people!

But you got perhaps less than 20 teams in Closed category; here you are backstabbing, backmouthing other fellow teams in media/sponsors circle (if sponsors read this, you think they will still gladly sponsor NST hunt again next year?)

What a joke! Grow up!

PS on second thought, maybe I can understand why you do what you did, coz by looking at your score, you so-called experienced Media teams may not even get into Top 10 for Beginners.
