TOP GEAR TREASURE HUNT 2014 - News

Extracted from TopGear magazine (Dec 2014 edition)

THE FUN YOU MISSED

TopGear Treasure Hunt 2014 a success?
You bet! Participants plunder Malacca for over RM80,000 worth of prizes.

Nearly a week before the TopGear Treasure Hunt 2014 kicked off, a briefing session was held for by event partner Timeout Solutions to lay the ground rules and competition details to the already eager participants. A good portion of the presentation was used to explain how the clues could be deciphered, and one example was all it took to make us breathe a sigh of relief for being on the organizing side of the fence.

Fast forward a few days and we find ourselves gearing up at Citta Mall in Ara Damansara, Petaling Jaya, in the wee hours of the morning- the Hunt challenging both crew and participants before it even got underway.

Seventy cars turned up that day, five of which were spanking new Mazda3s sponsored by Bermaz Motor for five lucky, or rather witty, teams for the weekend.

After chugging down cans of Red Bull supplied by a couple of lovely girls in their cute little MINI, everyone spread their newfound wings and set off in search of treasure. The first stop, for us at least, was the Petron service station at the Dengkil R&R stop along the PLUS highway. The challenges devised by main sponsors Petron and Elite Looks there tested the participants in ways both grueling and comedic, which was more entertaining in our eyes.

We couldn’t stay for long enough. Our Mazda BT-50 wrapped in Treasure Hunt livery needed to be at the Seremban R&R stop for participants to snap a ‘wefie’ with it. For those not in the know, that’s a group selfie, which can be a little tricky. Participants clambered onto the truck bed, and some even onto the roof to get the winning shot – yet another reason for us to pull out the popcorn.
As the teams wrapped up their photo shoots and went in search of more clue-related signboards, we continued our southbound journey on the PLUS highway to Malacca, where a night’s stay at Equatorial Hotel awaited us all.

Before being allowed to check in, participants had to first crack their heads and solve puzzles created by the Hunt’s official watch, Oris and co-sponsor Huper Optik. We had a go ourselves, only to come away with doubts about our intelligence.

Most of us grabbed a nap after the challenges were over, thinking we had enough time to prepare for dinner, only to find participants already waiting at the ballroom by the time we arrived. Their enthusiasm was understandable.

Who wouldn’t be excited at the thought of grabbing a slice of over RM80,000 in prizes?

Then again, they could have just been really hungry. The rich pool of prizes would not have been possible without our sponsors. And on top of contributions from Elite Looks, Petron, PLUS, Mazda, Oris and Huper Optik, official partners Cool Rhino, Elite Stickers, MedKlinn, Police Eyewear, Rachchip, SHARP, Systema, Times Bookstore, Toyo Tires and Uber Men chipped in too to make this year’s hunt one of the most enticing and exciting we’ve ever had.

In the end, the team of Fong Choon Kit, Ling Liong Ang, Lim Wei Nyin and Rachel Chia Lei Wen came out tops, beating 69 other cars to the RM21,500 worth of prizes waiting at the top. It was an adventure to remember for everyone nonetheless, one made up of awkward poses, funny signboards and for some, post-hunt Malaccan delicacies.

If anything, the TopGear Treasure Hunt 2014 managed to get us excited at the thought of doing it all over again in another 12 months.

If you weren’t there, see you then!

I'm very dissapointed joined Top Gear Hunt 2014. I feel be cheated by organiser when most of the winner is regular team. In registration form already stated participants for novice ONLY. Good bye Top Gear....

Hi Anonymous,

Perhaps you should share your feedback with COC, Time Out Solutions on the determining factor of novice in this Top Gear hunt. You may be using a different yardstick, compared to them.

Top Gear not for newbie treasure hunter like me. I need to participate in more treasure hunt to gain experience before I can joined back Top Gear. Please remove NOVICE ONLY in Top Gear rules and regulations. Just open to everyone to be fair and i can stay away if i'm not ready yet.

Hi 501001000,

Determining novice category? Come on, we live in 2014 and not 1969. Some of us not have 1 smartphone but more then that. I learning the treasure hunt thru internet and this blog also teach me a lot about that. Probably COC can refer this blog too. Some of the winner in THS Diamond Category list. I enjoy the hunt but please be fair.

Dear Anonymous,

What's that have to do with 1969 vs 2014 or having more than 1 smartphone?

As I said earlier, not everyone used the same yardstick. For you, you use THS Diamond Category as non-novice!

That may not be COC's choice of yardstick! TOS may refer to their own Hall of Fame. In fact, another COC, Purple Ants (in their earlier NST Hunt)also placed this champion team under Beginners category too. They may choose NOT to refer to this blog or THS Gold/Diamond listing to decide (whether this is 1969 or 2014).

Some beginners even think that non-novice means those who have joined more than 5 hunts or those who have appeared in top 3 in any open hunts!

I understand your frustration!

So where do we draw the line & what recourse is available to you?

The best is for you to directly feedback to COC & hope they change their criteria for future hunts! If COC is still stubborn & refuses to change & you feel it's unfair, then you can decide NOT to join their hunts until you are ready!

PS: I'm HNN blog facilitator; glad you enjoyed learning from this blog!

Dear Peja and Anonymous,

I'm on of the winners from yesterday's TopGear hunt. I'm being very honest to say that this is just my 7th hunt in my entire lifetime. I don't think i should be considered an expert or master in treasure hunting.

Instead of complaining about fairness, why not take this as a learning experience? Participate in more hunts to gain knowledge and experience.

You definitely will learn something new from every hunt you participate in. I certainly did learn from yesterday - i now know "MANY" can refer to a number (i.e. EIGHT) and i will take my new knowledge to the next hunt.

Just a simple advise from another novice hunter who actually learnt by participating in more hunts.

Good luck!!

Aiya u THS Diamond winner olso wanna sapu the novice category here. No shame!! If you are considerate enough u will join an open hunt. It doesn't augur well for the real novices out there when they have participated this hunt only to see the top ten with almost perfect scores in a novice hunt. Team no. 10 itself has a score of 202/210. Can u imagine how the real novices would feel??? But anyway you "tipu novices" will find all sorts of loop hole to still join a novice hunt. Nice job!

Just to be fair, the COC should release the overall rank for this hunt.

Novice like us never know how much we score or what is our position since some of the challenges never reveal how much points that we managed to get.

IF this is the case, how do novice know much have they improve or which challenge that they do badly?

All we ask for is a little bit of transparency because in the end, expert always know how good they perform and novice will always be in the dark...

This apply to all other hunt as well since it is very rare for the COC to reveal the overall ranking once the hunt ended.

Agreed with Noor Azlin Shah.

For info, our team has also managed to get a solid 1 minute 3 sec for the skateboarding challenge with no penalty of water spilling over. I think the winner for that challenge had a same score (but I'm not sure, perhaps they had better milisecond).

Our only mistake was, forgot to snap a picture of our score as evidence.

Btw, I like TOS' questions better.

Hahaha RP, don't be a sore loser lah. Even in a real novice competition, there will be novices who are better than others. Just accept it and move on.

Anonymous said...

SL, winner for the skateboard challenge had a time of 1min 1sec.

Anyway, they won 4 crates of RedBull as the prize

Anonymous said...

RP, don't behave like a sore loser. 10 challenges make up to 100 points which is 45% of total score?! Are you saying all there are master in challenges category? First time for me...

Anonymous said...

Yeah RP, stop whining and perhaps you should look at how to improve your own performance. It's not the THS Diamond Winner's fault if the organiser allows him to participate. It's a never ending argumentlah on how to define "NOVICE"...one which is not gonna be solved any time soon

Anonymous said...

RP and all novices, this is like junior ragging by their senior. If you dont like it. I warn you please go away. A lot of games options for you out there. I also had gone through this lesson before. You like it, you move on. If don't...you know what is your decision!.

Anonymous said...

Memang ramai yg tak puas hati bila umum tempat ke-10 lagi. Wtf 202?

TOS credibility also should can be questioned maaa..

Anonymous said...

Adoiii...apa kecoh kecoh ni. Dia punya nasib dia makan, lu punya nasib lu makan... jangan lupa tinggal sikit untuk saya makan tau....

SL said...

Pakcik tv3 masuk JPA treasure hunt! Hahaha

Anonymous said...

We should close this issue since we don't have solution to determine who is novice or non novice. All hunters out there always enjoy their hobby and sometimes you win then sometime i win. In some case, you need some luck to be in winner side. You are welcome to register as THS member and fight in your level league. Hopefully it is a fairness game that you want. Good Luck!

4 Ekor said...

Wtf? Why me? Dah 4 ekor mmg power...korang hado VW Polo?

Anonymous said...

Don't blame on those regular hunters. They were novice in the beginning as well, they were not born experts.

i myself have joined more than 20 hunts, and managed to put myself on stage on my 2nd hunt. Sometimes when i just sit on my chair and clap for others, do i need to blame the regulars for stealing my prize?

BTW, i'm still a "Novice" by THS standard.
