CROUCHING COCKROACH, HIDDEN TREASURE

Extracted from THS Tulip (Jul-Sep Edition 2012)

SUBANG JAYA 14 APRIL 2012: It's been 2 months since the inaugural mind-boggling THS Hunt, jointly clerked by Jay and VK. Perhaps a lacuna long enough for the mental wound from the first to have healed and the itch for a sequel to become unbearable!

With this THS Walk Hunt 2012 - Leg 2 nicely sandwiched between 2 epic hunts of Putrajaya and NPC-Celcom in April, it may appear that the choice of 14th April seems to be rightly made after a consultation with some fengshui gurus.

On the hunt morning, 30 teams of hunters eagerly assembled at Empire Shopping Gallery, waiting to explode into action. Mind you, this mall coincidentally suffered a seismic explosion back in September 2011, albeit of a different nature.

For a group of 2 members, to attempt 40 Questions and 4 Treasures within 3 hours, must have seemed like a tall order; but to be belatedly told that these posers were not in sequence within the floors, just made the quest to be nigh impossible!

Thankfully after some consultations, the COC wisely extended the hunt time by an additional 30 minutes.

Picture Paints A Thousand Words

Out of the 40Q, 10 of them were pictorial in nature. It was interesting that this genre of questions is gradually becoming a staple part of treasure hunt.

Previously seen in Charis Hospice Hunt 2012, this has been prevalently employed in THS Hunt Leg 2. Traditionally used in treasure question and I-Spy challenges, this has undergone metamorphosis into a creative cryptic clueing.

By swapping pictures into words, hunters have to search for answers that best fit all the pictures. Not too difficult, but nonetheless refreshing!

Crouching Cockroach

Somehow about half an hour later, it must have felt like a creepy search for the invertebrates during this Leg 2 hunt, when the Diamond hunters successfully solved Urbane Tee, ESH and Coach.

After all, the clue words were on bee nature, fly and unwanted pest! Hardly surprising if they may arguably feel like students of entomology! Couple this with Purple Antz as COC and you have the nagging suspicion that you are possibly watching an episode of “The Hidden World of Insects” in National Geographic Special channel.

Probably they may half-expect that locusts, grasshoppers and crickets were waiting for their turn to jump on them.

Hidden Treasure Sutah Habis!!!

There was a hilarious commotion at the Jaya Grocer, as several unfortunate hunters fell victims to a malicious hide-and-seek game. Solving the treasures correctly was a challenge by itself; but successfully finding them proved to be a greater dilemma, as somehow the intended item had been secretly shelved to the back row, away from the searching eyes of the participants.

Clara mentioned this is hidden obviously,
Finished I am told when 2 vowels confuses the organizer apparently.

Some hunters anxiously prowled the aisle of instant noodles in search of the treasures, with one or two perhaps on the verge of summoning the manager to explain the store’s policy of stock replenishment.

At the finish station, hunter Pirabakaran and a few participants highlighted the case of missing treasure to the COC, obviously displeased with the unsportsmanlike conduct that had jeopardized their hope of winning this event.

The buzz word for the day soon became “Treasure Sutah Habis” (Treasure already finished)!

However COC Shirley Ho of Purple Antz, reassured them that the treasures had been adequately stocked, and these were also available in the neighboring mall.

On the whole, the prevailing view in this THS Leg 2 hunt was that the questions were rather well cryptically set; while the pictorial posers were very interesting indeed!

Despite the brouhaha about the hidden treasure, the treasure questions were generally solvable.

For the survivors of THS Leg 1 hunt, this Leg 2 must have felt a tad tepid, as some Diamond questions were almost similar with those in Gold category.

The Diamond winner unsurprisingly turned out to be Claire and Alex, who are also the defending champions of Leg 1. With a score of near-perfection (only 1 mistake), surely they must be the team to beat in future THS hunts.
