THESUN MOTOR HUNT 2012 - News

On the hunt

Driving, navigating and solving near-impossible puzzles at theSun Motor Hunt 2012

It was a different kind of race than what we are accustomed to at the recently concluded theSun Motor Hunt 2012. An annual motoring treasure hunt event organised by theSun Media Corporation since 2004, the seventh ediion attracted 250 teams in the Closed, Open and Masters categories, all vying for the exclusive sponsor prizes up for grabs.

With each team comprising of a car and up to four members, all were competing in one of the country’s largest and most challenging motoring treasure hunts of its kind. The event started early on Sunday morning, Dec 16 at the start and finish point located at the Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Resort (BJGCR).

Registration was set to begin at 6am with some arriving as early as 5.30am, eager and ready to begin their hunt. After registration and safety briefing, all 250 teams and cars each received a RM70 fuel card from key event sponsor Caltex as well as a goodie bag of items from other sponsors. The race was flagged off at 7.30am by Sun Media Corporation managing director Chan Kien Sing, and right from the word go participants began navigating their way around the predetermined course sections regulated by pacenotes issued by the clerk-of-course, Time Out Solutions.

Teams were not allowed to use GPS or any other navigation devices as the distributed tulips were accompanied by a set of 30 questions, with answer clues given solely based on landmarks or locations along the set course.

With hints ranging from highly obvious types to anagrammed, hidden synonyms and coded ones, participants were required to answer them based on the pointers given, with references along the set course.

Hunters were tested by the coded
hints, anagrammed clues, and
hidden synonyms in the questions.

Some of the sections visited along the route where the participants had to look for their answers included theSun’s Petaling Jaya office, Glenmarie Industrial Park, Bandar Puteri Puchong, Ara Damansara, and even the Caltex station southbound along the ELITE highway before returning back to the starting point in BJGCR. Some of the answers even required participants to ‘scavenge’ or purchase items for a Christmas Shopping List, from partnering 7-Eleven outlets and Caltex petrol stations. These then needed to be presented to course marshals for verification.

A maximum of 130 points were up for the taking, with one point awarded for every correct answer written or correct purchased product presented, with bonus points given for each complete section as well. other challenges included an interactive crossword puzzle testing their knowledge of Caltex and its fuel products at the southbound ELITE Subang Jaya rest area before proceeding to their next section.
It was clear that most participants were stumped, proof of the highly challenging clues designed to make this year’s edition one of the toughest organised yet. Taking no chances, participants adorning the hunt’s official white, green and red t-shirts carried on with their clipboards, occasionally huddling in their efforts at solving riddles.

With prizes such as full HD LCD televisions, vacation trips, home appliances, and gadgets to be won, most pressed on and did their best to collect points within the six-hour time limit. Teams fought hard with the best of their abilities under the scorching noon sun, chasing after seemingly impossible clues, with the heat and pressure cranked up a few levels as the six-hour time limit and deadline drew closer. At about 1.30pm, the first group of hunters began to arrive, submitting their hunted items, answers and timing. The last groups arrived in BJGCR by 2pm, but some had points deducted for arriving past their time-limit.

The full-day’s hunt came to an end with the results being tabulated in confidence prior to the evening’s dinner and winners’ announcement. Dinner proved to be an experience as well, with the clerk-of-course revealing the answers to questions which seemed impossible to answer just hours ago. Many laughed, then came the occasional groans, but mostly it was a great exchange between the sighs of relief and the smiles of victory. Ensuring most, if not everyone went home with something: lucky draws were carried out over the course of dinner.

Living up to its name, theSun Motor Hunt this year saw over RM200,000 worth of prizes given away by main sponsor Caltex, as well as other sponsors that included Maybank, Metrojaya Berhad, Tesco Stores Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Watsons Group Malaysia, Gardenia Bakeries KL Sdn Bhd, Lam Soon Edible Oils Sdn Bhd (Antabax), BP Healthcare Group, SOCMA Trading (M) Sdn Bhd, CCM Pharmaceutical Sdn Bhd, Unilever (M) Sdn Bhd, Colgate Palmolive (M) Sdn Bhd, Berjaya Hotel Resorts, Bermaz Motor Trading Sdn Bhd (Mazda), Singer Malaysia and Sports Toto.

The night’s attention was soon focused solely on the top three category winners. Walking away with the grand prize of a 42-inch LCD TV from Singer for each team member, the Open Category’s glory went to team ‘Who’s That Chic’, comprised of hunters Teh Hann Tsong, Fung Wai Cheen, Lim Kien Khong and Phang Chung Kent.

Winning teams from all three categories of theSun Motor Hunt 2012
'Who's That Chick?', 'Paradigm Runners' and 'The Stripes' on Dec 16, 2012.

Achieving a milestone in the Masters Category, opened to experienced hunters from previous years, defending champions team ‘Paradigm Runners’ retained their title, chalking up a near-perfect score of 125 out of the maximum 130 points. Members Chin Kar Peng, Liong Chian Min, Jayaram Menon and Sam Rahman also took home the LCD TV grand prizes. None, however, were as joyous as Wan Mohd Zaid Wan Ahmad, Nadia Sabrina Harun Abdul, Nur Hidayah Kamaludin, and Norfaeza Ali of team ‘The Stripes’ in the Closed category. Opened to staff members of theSun Media Group and sponsors, the team from Maybank were clearly excited as this was their first win, promising to return next year after receiving an LCD TV each.

As this year’s edition of theSun Motor Hunt concluded, many left with great experiences and memories for life. Some have even stated their intent to compete in next year’s run, giving the clerk-of-course another full year to come up with tougher clues and challenges.

Expect the 2013 theSun Motor Hunt to return bigger than ever, along with larger and more attractive prizes as well.

Much fun under the sun

Group Photo before flag-off

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 17, 2012): The sun had barely come up and the skies were still dark, but nothing could dim the eagerness of participants of theSun Motor Hunt 2012, who were bright-eyed for a day of hunting fun.

From as early as 5.30am, some 250 teams gathered at the Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Resort (BJGCR) for the much-anticipated treasure hunt yesterday.

The teams, which consist of four people each, were flagged off at 7.30am by Sun Media Corporation managing director Chan Kien Sing.

Earlier, during a short briefing, Chan who noted many familiar faces among the participants, advised hunters to drive carefully and enjoy the hunt responsibly.

The hunters then left to scavenge the Klang Valley for clues and treasures to put themselves in the running to win various prizes worth more than RM200,000.

Many other prizes were also given away, including popular gadgets and household appliances.

The main sponsor was Caltex, who in addition to playing a huge role in the hunt, also provided hunters with RM70 petrol cards to fuel their journey.

Other sponsors included Maybank, Metrojaya Berhad, Tesco Stores Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Watsons Group Malaysia, Gardenia Bakeries KL Sdn Bhd, Lam Soon Edible Oils Sdn Bhd (Antabax), BP Healthcare Group, SOCMA Trading (M) Sdn Bhd, CCM Pharmaceutical Sdn Bhd, Unilever (M) Sdn Bhd, Colgate Palmolive (M) Sdn Bhd, Berjaya Hotel Resorts, Bermaz Motor Trading Sdn Bhd (Mazda), Singer Malaysia and Sports Toto.

Time Out Solutions was the clerk-of-course.

Challenges await the hunters!

Each team had to answer 30 questions and find three ‘treasures’ within a six-hour time frame, but the questions were not as straightforward as they appeared.
They also had to solve two ‘challenges’ that tested strategy, knowledge and speed.

In previous hunts, the more difficult questions would be written in bold typeface so as to allow participants to strategise their hunt – but this year, there were fewer clues given, which made the hunt all the more challenging.

With anagrams, synonyms, puzzles and riddles to solve, the participants scoured the Ara Damansara, Puchong and Subang Jaya areas for answers.

Leaving nothing to chance, the participants – dressed in white, green and red t-shirts – were seen walking about with clipboards and huddling in their teams to put their heads together to crack the quizzes.

Even with the limited time, scorching afternoon sun and heavy traffic, the hunters raced from section to section as the deadline grew closer and the hunt literally heated up.

Most of the teams made it back to the finish point at BJGCR within the allotted time, carrying their ‘treasures’ and armed with their answer sheets.

Some, however, arrived past the six-hour deadline and lost points, but they nevertheless had fun.

Teams which earned the highest points received their prizes at a ceremony last night where many attractive prizes were also given away in a lucky draw.

Closed Category Champion - The Stripes

It was first time lucky for the Closed Category champions, who are from Maybank, one of the main sponsors of the hunt.

Having participated twice already in the bank’s internal treasure hunts, the team was ecstatic with their win (a 42-inch Singer LED TV for each member) and will defintely return for more next year.

Open Category Champion - Who's That Chick?
As for the “three guys and a girl” team who emerged champions in the Open Category, they were still “in shock with their win”.

One of the team members, Lim Kien Khong, joked that the 42-inch LCD TV prize is probably as big as his house.

Masters Category Champion - Paradigm Runners

Paradigm Runners, who are defending champions in the masters category, achieved near-perfect score, chalking up 125 of the 130 points available.

Team member Jayaram Menon said they were happy with their performance and only missed out on one “treasure”.

“We feel on top of the world and are defintely coming back next year,” he said.

900 all set for ‘mother of all hunts’

Participants of theSun Motor Hunt 2012 pump their fists in excitement as
they gear up for the hunt at Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Resort on Sunday
KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 13, 2012): Secret discussions and witty remarks were the order of the day as 220 teams geared up today to secure the title of theSun Motor Hunt champions this year.

The teams of four, comprising both amateur and seasoned treasure hunters, received their briefing for the annual treasure hunt organised by theSun to be held on Sunday.

This year, the hunt will be held in the Klang Valley and will cover 58km for the Masters category (for seasoned hunters) and 70km in the Open.

For six hours, the 900 hunters will have to drive to various places and crack codes in order to spot objects or buy certain 'treasures' they must bring back when they cross the finish line.

The clerk-of-course, Time Out Solutions (TOS), advised the eager bunch to be mindful of accuracy and clarity when solving the puzzles, and even dished out a few riddles as examples.

"Also make sure your cars are in working order, and it would be advisable to bring clip boards, pens, correction fluid, dictionaries and a thesaurus.

"Time management, general knowledge and being meticulous are really important," TOS managing director Dominic Roche said today.

theSun Motor Hunt is known as the "mother of all hunts" by avid hunters for its challenging riddles and interesting clues, testing mind and willpower.

Drive safe and enjoy the hunt

Chan (left) receiving the mock cheque from Oh for theSun Motor Hunt 2012

CALTEX – the brand that aspires for drivers everywhere to ‘enjoy the journey’ – is the main sponsor for our much anticipated motor hunt, set to blast off on Dec 16.

There was a good response from participants when entries opened, with many first-timers, among the 220 teams raring to try their hand at conquering this ‘mother of all hunts’.

When commenting about their participation, Chevron Malaysia Ltd country chair man Jeremy Oh, said that they were very much looking forward to the event.

“Our involvement in theSun Motor Hunt is part of our efforts to support and encourage activities that brings people together and ‘puts the joy back into driving’.
The motor hunt is an exciting way to support this endeavour, especially when it has gained much popularity, among motorist in the country over the years,” he said when handing over the cash sponsorship to theSun’s managing director Chan Kien Sing.

Apart from the fun that teams would have, seeking out ‘hidden treasure’, this challenge promotes good teamwork, creativity and strategic thinking, Oh however stressed that participants should make it a point to mind their safety and that of other road users and pedestrians. “At Caltex we greatly emphasize on safety and respect for all road users,” Oh further explained.

Motor hunters will be expected to obey all traffic regulations and not do as they please in their rush to win the jackpot. Adherence to good driving practices and traffic laws will be monitored strictly and teams may even lose points if they are found flouting traffic regulations. In addition to this cash sponsorship, Caltex is also the event’s official petrol sponsor. Treasure hunters taking part in this year’s challenge, will have their cars powered by Caltex fuel.

Each adrenalin-charged team will be given a RM70 Starcash card to fuel their efforts, through the race and beyond – the prepaid card can be used for the purchase of petrol or any item from Caltex service stations.

Asked what advice he would offer hunters Oh said: “Use this opportunity to get to know your city and its many unique facets but strategise your hunt. Also remember to fuel up and check your vehicle the day before.

“During the hunt, monitor the instrument readings on your car display panel from time to time as you wouldn’t want your vehicle to breakdown and delay you. Furthermore, assigned drivers in each team should especially ensure that they have a good night’s rest the day before, so that they will stay alert and charged-up throughout the journey.

“Lastly, be a responsible driver. If you’re sleepy or need to refresh yourself, stop by any Caltex station along the hunt route,” he advised.

Overall, teams are advised to be well organised to make the most of their time. Teams may end up coming out tops, by just having a good plan and strategy in place. After all, mistakes are usually made when in haste. By planning well – on what to do and who is doing what in each team, it will minimise confusion and time wasting.

Remaining clam and sticking to the plan, will lessen the pressure to cut corners or break rules just to keep ahead.

With these basic tips, theSun Motor Hunt 2012 organisers and their sponsors, hope that all teams will be able to sit back, ‘enjoy the journey’ and have a memorable time.

Time Out Solutions is the clerk of course, while other sponsors include Metrojaya Berhad, Tesco Stores Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Watsons Group Malaysia, Gardenia Bakeries KL Sdn Bhd, Lam Soon Edible Oils Sdn Bhd (Antabax), BP Healthcare Group, SOCMA Trading (M) Sdn Bhd, CCM Pharmaceutical Sdn Bhd, Unilever (M) Sdn Bhd, Colgate Palmolive (M) Sdn Bhd, Berjaya Hotel Resorts, Bermaz Motor Trading Sdn Bhd (Mazda), Singer Malaysia and Sports Toto.

May the best team win and don’t be surprised if the ‘slow and steady win the race’. In this game, keeping safe and doing it right, will give you every advantage!

A briefing will be conducted today, Dec 13 at 6.30pm in Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Resort. It is vital that each team sends at very least one team member for the briefing and collection of goodie bag this evening.

The main sponsor this year is Caltex, a leading brand under Chevron Malaysia Limited. The Caltex Star, a familiar logo, is a brand that stands for quality, value and service. Their tagline "Enjoy the journey" is very much aligned with the spirit of theSun's Motorhunt.

The clerk-of-course is Time Out Solutions, who has each year successfully designed a hunt that is memorable and bound to excite even veterans. The venue will be at the Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Resort.

Other brand sponsors include Starbucks, Metrojaya, Tesco, Watsons, Gardenia Bakeries, Antabax, BP Healthcare, SOCMA, CCM pharmaceutical, Breeze, Colgate Palmolive, Ikea, Berjaya Hotel Resorts, Singer, Sports Toto and Mazda. CM,

Hi, I thought the below 3 is not a promotion, but just repetitive.

2Angie Teh Sook Mei
19Mohd Shahrin bin Mohd Zainuddin
22Peh Kok Hun

2 previous entry as Teh Sook Mei

19 previous entry as Shahrin B. Zainuddin

22 previously spelt wrongly as Koh Pek Hun

Thus, in my opinion in the latest Hall of Fame, there is at least three names that are repetitive.

You're right, CK!

Compared to the earlier list, these 3 names are recently added, despite them already previously listed, under slightly different spelling/ form.

Perhaps somebody from TOS can clean up the Master list and delete any repeated names.

If they're unsure, perhaps they can always check with you, since you seem to know TOS Masters list better :)

Strangely a Master name has been deleted from the Hall of Fame ... our very own Dominic Roche!

I thought the membership of Hall of Fame is irrevocable.

Perhaps he felt a conflict of interest to be listed in his own Hall Of Fame!

think the rm400 entry fee is a bit steep for a half day hunt. but if the prizes are lucrative, should be ok, like the new sunday times hunt which offered a polo sedan car as the grand prize. even then, the hunt's entry fee was only rm200 per team. the sun hunt is most remembered for allocating prizes up to 150th position in the open category.

Not only prizes up to 150 teams. Normally, lucky draw for team 151 to 250, and most will get the lucky draw even team that get DQed, mostly electronic products. And don't forget a good buffet dinner and goodie bags that normally worth more than RM 50 per pax, if not more and RM 50 petrol vouchers. And if you all notice by now, you might wonder what Mazda do there as sponsor? Maybe.. Last but not least, sun hunt is the hunt where all teams will be there regardless of category, thus is the only hunt that can accurately measured your team standings with the rest of the pier. Thus, in my opinion, it is not too much to say, if your team is champion of sun hunt 2012 it is as good as Malaysia champion for year 2012. No hunt teams will try to miss it. That's why it is called mother of all hunts.

Wonder why Yeoh Ban Lye not in the Hall Of Fame list...he had a lot of hunt championship belt...and his team win runner up on open category...just made me angry with the TOS hall of fame list.....
