Effective training for gruelling race
KUALA LUMPUR: Gunning
for the top three spots was the aim of four young lads of the New Straits
Times’ Streets Race 2014 yesterday.
Clocking in at three
hours and 43 minutes, the team made up of Mohamad Affindi Nudin, Jasni Khairil
Jamaluddin, Suhairi Ghazali and Badrul Hisham Mohamed Kassim, was the first to
cross the finish line at the New Straits Times headquarters in Jalan Riong.
All members, except for
Jasni, were competing for the first time in the race. Jasni had participated in
the Streets Race in 2012, winning a consolation prize.
It was Jasni who took
the initiative to form the winning team as he believed his friends had all it
took to emerge victorious.
“We have been training
daily at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa for four years now. We are also marathon
buddies, having participated together yearly since we became friends. They had
the stamina and endurance to last in the race which combines Boot Camp
elements.
“This win is a bonus and
blessing for us,” said the Jasni, adding that the toughest challenge was
carrying a 20kg sandbag and walking over 4km to Bangunan AmBank Group in Jalan
Raja Chulan.
The challenge of
climbing up over 2,000 steps up KL Tower to get their next clue was a breeze
for Affindi and Jasni as they were among the top 10 in the recent KL Tower
International Towerthon.
Badrul said to come in
first was a big surprise as they had a late head start.
They were one of the
last teams to solve a word search at the NST headquarters after the flag off.
“We took longer than
expected to finish it. We were so engrossed in it that by the time we were
done, many teams had left and got their clues to proceed to the next
destination. We had to keep our spirits high. One of our strategy was to run
while carrying the 20kg sandbag while some others chose to walk due to the
weight.”
Coming in at second
place was team “Are we there yet?”, comprising four Bootcamp members, Muhammad
Hanif Che Ismail, Wong Kien Min, Mohd Rakesh Abdul Rahman and Terence Tay.
“This is the second time
we are competing. The last time round we finished in the top 10, so we are very
happy that we got into the top three,” said Tay.
“The toughest part of
the challenge had to be climbing the KL Tower steps,” said Rakesh, adding that
they were in the lead up to that point.
Tay said a bit of the
money would be used for a celebration dinner, while the rest would be split
among them.
“We look forward to the
next Streets Race and we will definitely participate again with the aim of
winning the first prize,” said Rakesh.

Street’s amazing race
KUALA LUMPUR: PARTICIPANTS of the 2014 New Straits Times Streets Race painted the city red as they raced past some of Kuala Lumpur’s famous streets and landmarks.
The race, in its third edition, since its inception in 2011, saw 125 teams of four solve puzzles, pick up clues and race to the finish line.
New Straits Times Press group managing editor Datuk Abdul Jalil Hamid flagged off the teams at 7.30am, and the race got off to a flying start with participants running towards Jalan Kurau for the first clue.
They then made a dash for the Bangsar LRT Station where they had to take a train to KL Sentral to get to Jalan Tun Sambanthan.
The first group of participants could not contain their excitement of being in the lead and began cheering in the train.
Swarms of participants dressed in the Streets Race red T-shirts filled the streets of Tun Sambanthan where the next task awaited them.
The next task was one of Herculean proportions as each team had to carry two 20kg sandbags to the AmBank tower in Jalan Raja Chulan.
The teams had different strategies, from taking turns to carry the sacks while some of the stronger participants ran with the weight.
Fishing Challenge |
We are gonna win!!! |
The test of strength then turned into a test of dexterity as participants had to make a fishing rod out of chopsticks, thread and a paper clip.
They then had to “fish” four keys using the fishing rod to pass the test.
At that point, the race was already past the halfway point and participants were required to get the next clue 23 storeys up Menara KL, which involved over 2,000 steps.
With that, the teams headed towards Lake Titiwangsa for a task that tested their physical endurance and required a bit of luck.
Three buoys were placed in the middle of the lake, with only one containing a clue to the next destination, if the first buoy they kayaked to did not have the clue, they would have to make their way to the next.
After that it was a mad dash to City Hall’s soccer field in Brickfields and then back to Balai Berita, where Ska Runners TT Kuda was the first team to cross the finish line.
After the race, participants gathered for lunch, before prizes for the top 10 winners were presented, along with lucky draw prizes, including hotel stays and dining vouchers.
The winning team went home with a cash prize of RM10,000, while the second and third teams went home with RM8,000 and RM5,000, respectively.
“The support towards the race is very encouraging. I am very pleased to see the participation of teams across all races, age groups and genders,” said Jalil.
“The Streets Race is a good branding platform for the community pullout and it allows people to get to know more places in the city as they race on foot and rail,” he added.
Also present were AmFamily Takaful Bhd chief executive officer Wan Zamri Wan Zain, AmBank Group chief information officer, Charles Tan and assistant vice-president of media affairs (group communications and strategic marketing department), Haliza Hamid, NSTP marketing general manager Putri Shireen Syed Othman, and Streets editor Prasanna Raman.
The sponsors for Streets Race 2014 were AmBank Group, Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd, Sunway Pyramid, Unilever Holdings Sdn Bhd, Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd, Nestle Malaysia, Permanis Sandilands Sdn Bhd and Menara Kuala Lumpur.
The lucky draw prizes were sponsored by Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Sunway Putra Hotel, The Westin Kuala Lumpur, Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur, Best Western Premier Dua Sentral and Grand Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur. FlyFM was the official radio station for the event.
