Ex-shuttler with brain damage receives aid

IT was a poignant moment for the father of a former state badminton player who suffers from brain damage after a road accident when the Bayan Baru Welfare Association donated RM5,000 to the family.

Holding back tears, Oon Beng Teik, 50, received a mock cheque from the association’s representative David Yim at a restaurant in Sungai Ara on Thursday.

Oon’s daughter Him Yee, 21, suffered serious head injuries after her motorcycle collided with a car.

The mishap also saw the death of her friend who was riding pillion last September.

Oon said the contribution would be used to partially settle Him Yee’s medical fees.

“I have exhausted my savings and have since spent more than RM240,000 to help my daughter including sending her over to China for treatment,” Onn said.

“I am grateful for the assistance and contributions from various parties including the Lions Club, and the Bayan Baru Barisan Nasional. I am confident that Him Yee will get better because of your help,” he said.

The sum was collected from the association’s treasure hunt event, which was held on July 23.

The hunt began at the Sunshine Square shopping complex in Bayan Baru and ended in Hat Yai, Thailand.

Yim who is also the Bayan Baru Barisan Nasional coordinator, said Him Yee had represented Penang since her primary school days prior to the accident, so the association felt compelled to help her.
