Hunters find 2014 hunt trickier

KUALA LUMPUR: PARTICIPANTS of the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2014 last Sunday remained bright-eyed and bushy-tailed throughout the hunting expedition even though the riddles and clues this year were trickier than in the last two years.

Among them, one stood out — literally — as she was eight months’ pregnant. Wirda Wina did not let that deter her from giving her all during the hunt.

The 31-year-old said this was her second consecutive year in the hunt and she decided to take part even though she was pregnant with her fourth child.
“After participating last year, I became fond of treasure hunting as I found that it helped to stimulate the mind. To solve the riddles, we have to think out of the box.”

Wirda was teamed with her husband, sister and cousin in the Beginner category.

“I was not worried at all as I would be able to handle matters should there be complications.
Besides, my husband was with me. I did not run, of course. I totally enjoyed this year’s hunt even though the questions were more challenging.”

Noor Hazlina Zainal Abidin, 40, who was also in the Beginner category, brought along her children, Natasha Azira Au, 16, and Zairul Shariezal Au, 15, for the hunt.

They were the only group comprising one adult and three teenagers, which included Noor Hazlina’s nephew, 17-year-old Mohd Faiz Rosli.

“We joined the hunt for fun and to spend time together, as I think this kind of activity is beneficial and a good learning experience for my kids,” said the mother-of-four.

Hazlina said she loved giving her children the chance to try out activities that were challenging, so they could figure out their own interests and make smart choices.

“I encourage them to join many activities. Although challenging, the event taught them how to deal with real-life obstacles.”

Zairul, who was the youngest participant in the hunt, said he was interested in challenging activities.

“This is not the first time that I have participated in a hunt. The event was exciting, although it was tough,” said the Form Three student from SMK Taman Connaught.

Universiti Tun Abdul Razak student Prem Latha said the questions in the hunt were difficult and required language skills.

“I was invited by my friends, who had participated last year. We made all the necessary preparations. Although the questions were tricky, we learned how to think critically to solve the puzzles under pressure,” said the 23-year-old chemical engineering student, who added that she would participate again next year.

Prem’s friend, Jeevarat Ramakrishnan, said the hunt helped the team forge camaraderie.

“This is my second year in the hunt. Last year, my teammates and I did not perform well, as we failed to follow the indicators. This year, although the questions were harder, we figured out the answers.”

The Closed (media/ sponsor) category’s Potong Korner TV3 team won the hunt’s grand prize, a RM130,888 Volkswagen Jetta.

The half-day event, which involved solving riddles and searching for hidden items along designated routes in the Klang Valley, Cyberjaya and Putrajaya, saw 840 hunters taking part. They had to answer questions comprising anagrams, general knowledge, container (word within a word), word reversals, riddles and combinations.

Volkswagen Malaysia was the main sponsor of the hunt, while Petronas was the fuel sponsor. Perbadanan Putrajaya provided the venue, food and beverage.

Other sponsors included Felda Global Ventures, Gamuda Bhd, Kedah government-linked company Bina Darulaman Bhd, QSR Brands, AirAsia X, EXIM Bank, Philips Malaysia, Star Cruises, BlackBerry, Celcom Axiata Berhad, Lam Soon Edible Oils Sdn Bhd, Tesco, Hyatt Regency Kuantan Resort, Holiday Villa Hotels & Resorts, Hilton Kuala Lumpur, Mutiara Taman Negara, Holiday Villa Subang, Dutch Lady Milk Industries Bhd, Sime Darby, Mattel Malaysia, Milo Malaysia, Sushi King, Banana Boat, Mondelez Malaysia, Microsoft Mobile Devices, U Mobile, HTC Malaysia, LG Electronics, Epson, Schneider Electric, Permanis Sandilands, Shave2U.com and Kasperky Lab.

TV3 team wins grand prize

PUTRAJAYA: A STROKE of luck saw “Potong Korner TV3” walking away with the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2014 grand prize of a Volkswagen Jetta worth RM130,888.

The winning team of the closed (media/sponsor) category comprised Fazliana Ibrahim, Mohd Sharil Dukli, Salehuddin Yusof and Hanim Muhili.

“We are excited and happy to win the Volkswagen Jetta and first prize in the category,” said team spokesman Hanim.

He said good chemistry among members saw them triumph.

“We are keen treasure hunters and had joined many such events in the past.

“We consider this as one of the toughest hunts in view of the time constraint and standard of the questions,” she said after receiving the mock key to the Volkswagen Jetta at Kompleks Perbadanan Putrajaya yesterday.

In the regular category, “Hunters R Us” took the top spot, while in the beginner’s category, “Lucky Hunters” triumphed.

“Hunters R Us” comprised Chong Voon Kiat, Margaret Sha, Lim Ming Yang and Loo Wern Ching.

Chong said though they were disappointed after failing to land the grand prize, they nevertheless enjoyed the hunt.

“We are keen treasure hunters. I will not deny that we were attracted by the prizes, but I would like to commend the organisation of the event.

“We will not give up in winning the grand prize, we are definitely going to join the event next year,” Chong said.

Chong also won the first prize in the same category in the inaugural New Sunday Times Motor Hunt in 2012.

“Lucky Hunters” team leader Goh Mee Mee said the team could not believe that they had won in their category. .

“We had joined several hunts before, but this is our first win. We are satisfied with the result and will try again next year,” she said.

Goh said they won the competition as they had gained experience from previous events.

The team comprised Goh, Chin Beng Seng, Wong Pau Yean and Lee Kean Ho.

A total of 210 entries with 840 participants took part in the half-day event, involving three categories that offered more than RM200,000 in prizes.

Winners in each category took home RM5,000.

Prizes were awarded up to the fifth position in the regular and closed (media/sponsor) categories, while the beginner category saw prizes awarded up to the 30th position.

Prizes were given away by Volkswagen Malaysia regional general manager Bojeng Bari, New Straits Times deputy group editor Abdul Rashid Yusoff and New Straits Times Press marketing general manager Putri Shireen Syed Othman.

Earlier in the morning, the 210 vehicles were flagged off by Rashid at Dataran Merdeka.

The half-day event involved solving riddles and clues as well as searching for hidden treasure items along designated routes from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya, where the event ended.

The participants had to deal with cryptic questions, in the form of anagrams, general knowledge, container (word within a word), word reversals, and others.

Since its inception, the hunt incorporated a charity event as participants are required to find groceries or food items, which would be donated to selected orphanages.

This year, the recipients are Rumah Anak-Anak Yatim dan Asnaf As-solihin Kanchong Barat and Persatuan Rumah Kids.

Petronas was the fuel sponsor for the hunt while Perbadanan Putrajaya was the venue, and food and beverage sponsor.

More sponsorships for hunt

SUPPORT for the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2014 is continuing to pour in, with two companies handing in their sponsorships on Friday.

First-time sponsor Bina Darulaman Berhad, a Kedah government-linked company, gave RM25,000, with its group managing director Datuk Izham Yusoff expressing hope that the hunt would be a greater success.

He presented the sponsorship to New Straits Times Press group managing editor Datuk Abdul Jalil Hamid at Balai Berita here.

BDB’s main activities involve investment holding, provision of management services and property development. Its subsidiaries are leading names in Kedah for township development, construction, road works, quarry, and golf and leisure.

Izham said the group’s sponsorship was one way of showing its appreciation for the support it had received from the media, especially the NSTP group.

“This is also part of our corporate social responsibility.”

Jalil thanked BDB for the sponsorship, saying support from sponsors had helped turn the hunt into the country’s biggest in terms of participation and prizes.

“We chose the motor treasure hunt as one of our programmes as it is in line with our brand values.

“It is healthy, challenging, fun-filled as well as suitable for everyone, including families. Participation in previous years were multiracial and included those from all age groups.”

Also present were New Straits Times deputy group editor Abdul Rashid Yusoff, New Sunday Times editor Chok Suat Ling and BDB group corporate communications senior manager Sajahan Waheed.

Earlier, another first-time sponsor Gamuda Berhad presented its sponsorship of RM30,000 to Chok.

The company was represented by its group communications assistant general manager Audrey Lakai.

The hunt, which is being held for the third time this year, is scheduled on Sept 28.

Participants will be flagged off from Dataran Merdeka and the event will end in Putrajaya.

The hunt is divided into three categories — open (beginner), regular and media/sponsor.

The winner in each category will take home RM5,000. Cash prizes will be awarded up to the fifth position in the regular and media/sponsor categories, while for the open category, prizes are awarded to the 30th position.

The inaugural event in 2012 was recognised as the nation’s biggest motor hunt with some 1,000 people from 231 teams participating and prizes worth RM200,000 up for grabs.

Last year’s affair was also a huge success with more than 1,000 participants from 268 teams taking part.

This year, participants could expect another fun-filled and exciting half-day event, which would take them to several areas in the Klang Valley, answering riddles and obtaining hidden treasures along the way.

A myriad of wonderful prizes await winners.

These include attractive lucky draw prizes such as return flight tickets, cruise holidays, mobile phones, electrical and home appliances and hotel stays.

Petronas is the fuel sponsor and Perbadanan Putrajaya the venue and F&B sponsor.

Other sponsors include Felda Global Ventures Holdings Sdn Bhd, QSR Brands Berhad, Exim Bank, Philips Malaysia, Star Cruises, Celcom Axiata Berhad, BlackBerry, AirAsia X, Tesco, Hyatt Regency Kuantan Resort, Holiday Villa Hotels & Resorts, Hilton Kuala Lumpur, Mutiara Taman Negara, Holiday Villa Subang, Dutch Lady Milk Industries Berhad, Sime Darby Berhad, Mattel Malaysia, Milo Malaysia, Sushi King, Banana Boat, Antabax/Fruitale (Lam Soon Group), Mondelez Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Microsoft Mobile Devices, U Mobile Sdn Bhd, HTC Malaysia, LG Electronics(M) Sdn Bhd, Epson (M) Sdn Bhd, Schneider Electric (M) Sdn Bhd, Permanis Sandilands Sdn Bhd and Shave2U.com.

Those wishing to take part in the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2014 on Sept 28, are advised to send in their entries early.

“It will be on a first-come first-served basis. Though the deadline for submission is Sept 20, it is better to be early in submitting forms as registration will be closed once we reach 200 teams.”

Philips Malaysia is among the earliest to come on board as a sponsor.

The diversified technology company is continuing its support of the event following its first sponsorship last year.

On Thursday, the company’s contributions were handed over by its chief executive officer, Ali Jaleel, to Chok in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

“Philips Malaysia is pleased to be able to contribute to the third edition of the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt and we hope that Philips’ participation will make it more fun and exciting.”

Ali said Philips’ people-centric products were designed to meet consumers’ needs and desires and they believe the winners would enjoy their prizes from Philips.

“On behalf of the team at Philips, we wish all the motor hunt participants the very best, and our congratulations to New Sunday Times for once again organising this greatly-anticipated event,” added Ali.

Thanking Philips, Chok said the company had been a strong supporter of the event.

“Without the support of sponsors like Philips Malaysia, the event would not have emerged as big and popular as it is today.

“We look forward to Philips’ continued support.”

This year's organisation of the NST Motor Hunt really looks like a last minute job. How come the ads and contest forms only came out in mid Sept for hunt that is on the 28th?

Last year the Hunt was announced at least 2 months before the date.

Holding it on a Sunday again also deprives people in Kelantan, Tganu and Johor from participating.

To be exact, NST Motor Hunt Entry Form came out on 31st Aug (Sun), not mid-Sept! If you visit HNN blog frequently, you would notice that HNN has already announced NST hunt date 28 Sep since mid-Aug.

As to the choice of Sunday, well.. that you gotta ask the organizer themselves lah! :)
