An even bigger hunt next year

A GRANDER AFFAIR: The overwhelming response to the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2013 has given an impetus to the newspaper to make the hunt more spectacular next year, writes Punitha Kumar.

IT was a day of solving riddles and searching for hidden "treasure", but this was no Indiana Jones movie.

Last Sunday saw more than 1,000 participants from 268 teams from across the country congregating for one purpose -- to have fun and win amazing prizes in the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2013, the biggest such event in Malaysia.

Flagged off by New Straits Times Press chief executive officer Mohd Azlan Abdullah and Volkswagen Group Malaysia managing director Dr Zeno Kerschbaumer at Dataran Merdeka at 8am, the participants were sent to various locations in the Klang Valley to solve riddles and puzzles and to look for "treasure" items.

While searching for clues at a row of shops in Damansara Perdana, a hunter said: "the questions are really hard. It is nerve-wracking, but we are having fun and hope to finish in time".

The hunt, which offered a RM100,000 Volkswagen Polo Sedan as the grand prize, ended around 2pm. A closing ceremony was held at Putrajaya Corporation's Dewan Seri Siantan.

New Straits Times deputy group editor Rashid Yusof, Volkswagen Group Malaysia marketing and public relations director Petra Schreiber, New Sunday Times editor Chok Suat Ling, New Straits Times Press marketing general manager Putri Shireen Syed Othman and hunt organising committee chairman Ramlan Said gave away prizes to the participants.

The grand prize was sponsored by Volkswagen Group Malaysia, while Petronas was the fuel sponsor and Putrajaya Corporation the venue sponsor.

Apart from seasoned hunter group "4 Ekor", which bagged the grand prize in the regular category, "Hasilian" and "Bizzy Bees TV3" won in the beginner and media/sponsor categories, respectively.

"Hasilian" team leader Muhammad Sani Mohd Nor said the team's victory was based on luck, as they had guessed most of the answers.

"We were unable to identify some of the answers, so we guessed our way through. It was indeed a pleasant surprise to be in first place."

"Bizzy Bees TV3" team leader Salehuddin Yusof said this was the team's biggest treasure hunt victory.

"I have participated in more than 20 treasure hunts and this is our best performance.

"We are proud of our achievement and grateful to the New Sunday Times for organising such an event."

For the hunt, participants were grouped into three categories -- regular, beginner and media/sponsor.

The winning team of each category took home RM5,000 and the grand prize winner was selected from a draw among the winning teams.

Those who did not win the top prizes still returned home with lucky draw gifts from sponsors.

The prizes included return tickets to Busan, South Korea, and Hangzhou, China, Penang-Phuket-Krabi packages on the SuperStar Libra cruise ship, pre-paid investment trading accounts, handphones, home theatre sets, electrical and home appliances, hotel stays and beauty product hampers.

The motor hunt, with Purple Antz as the clerk-of-course, saw the participation of other sponsors, such as Philips, UDA Holdings Bhd, Celcom Axiata Bhd, Bank Rakyat, QSR Brands (M) Holdings Sdn Bhd, Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd, BlackBerry, Sime Darby, Tesco, Hyatt Regency Kuantan Resort, Banana Boat, Epson, Holiday Villa Hotels & Resorts, Sushi King, Estee Lauder, Select-TV Solutions Sdn Bhd, Jireh Consult, Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, Maybank, Exim Bank, Kraft Foods Malaysia, Permodalan Nasional Bhd, Edaran Tan Chong Motor, Permanis Sandilands, Melvita, Putrajaya Shangri-La and Genting Malaysia Bhd.

Last year, the hunt attracted 231 teams.

Chok said the overwhelming response from readers and members of the public to this year's hunt had given an impetus to the newspaper to make the hunt "even more grand and spectacular" next year.

Many, if not most, of the contestants also vowed to return next year to test their skills and try their luck again.

The prize pool for the hunt was also hailed as one of the most luxurious for such events.

It's all in the thrill for treasure hunters
By Chok Suat Ling (New Sunday Times editor)

DEDICATED: Being able to solve a puzzle is more exhilarating than jumping head first into space

AFTER several long months of planning, the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2013 was held last Sunday, with the participation of 268 teams.

It's the second year the event was held, with an increased number of hunters from last year's 231 teams. That there were over a thousand people -- four in a team -- willing to wake up at the unseemly hour of 5am to be flagged off from the heart of the city on what's supposed to be a day of quiet relaxation was heartening and it greatly encouraged us to take it to a level higher than last year.

So it was that the Klang Valley was flooded last Sunday with a sea of red, people of all races, ages and walks of life converged on specific locations around the city looking for answers to riddles and clues, and unearthing difficult-to-find "treasures". Many came fully equipped with thesauruses, dictionaries and the latest search and tracking devices, but all that is really required is what's between your ears.

Indeed, the treasure hunting fraternity is expanding, with many joining the field through the years as wide-eyed novices and then rising through the ranks to later qualify for a place in the prestigious league of Masters.

This group comprises sage Yoda-like personalities, who are able to solve the most cryptic of riddles and puzzles without being reduced to tears and hair-tearing hysteria. They have hunted for many years, usually boast an above-average intelligence quotient and possess an otherworldly mastery of the written word.

It's not easy to secure a place among the Masters. Some have hunted for years, but the placing eludes them as they have not registered sufficient wins to earn a spot.

I've been told many times by fellow hunters that my team will never earn a placing because we have IQs comparable to that of chipmunks and used car salesmen. They were joking, of course. Or, perhaps not.

However, many, if not most, regular hunters are not deterred by a lack of placing or even if they emerge last in the field every single time.

They continue to hunt not because of fame, glory or the prizes offered but for the sheer love of it. This, despite the recriminations.

Some scoff that treasure-hunting is not really a sport but merely an organised outing comprising eggheads and geeky word enthusiasts, but that has not deterred the increasingly close-knit hunting fraternity.

A Treasure Hunt Society of Malaysia has been set up and hunts continue to attract droves of participants every time they are organised. After all, being able to unlock a puzzle is a feat more exhilarating than jumping head first into space with a parachute on your back. Sure, it does not exude the rugged machismo of a motor rally, or race, and athletic prowess the likes of that possessed by Usain Bolt is not a pre-requisite but it does not make it any less a sport than bowling, chess or beauty pageants.

Sport is also a unifier like no other. Every time we won the Thomas Cup right up to 1992, Malaysians slapped each other on the backs and cheered as one nation.

Only sports can bring everyone -- whether tall, short, thin, horizontally challenged, rich, poor, a Barisan Nasional or opposition supporter, Malay, Indian, Chinese and  dan lain-lain -- together.

And, as with all sports, treasure-hunting is as a good vehicle as any to foster multiracial togetherness. People of all races and even whole families will come together to decipher the questions thrown their way. It is teamwork at its best.

As for the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt, and all  events of such size and scale, there were  shortcomings and for that, we would like to apologise to participants if it had marred your enjoyment of the event.

On behalf of the organising committee, I would like to congratulate  the winning teams, thank those who joined the hunt and all others who played a part, no matter how minuscule, to make it happen through all the sweat, toil, sleepless nights and tears. You were great sports.

Onwards to the next year!

IT'S crunch time for the more than 1,000 participants of the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2013 today.

The 268 teams from three categories -- open, regular and media/sponsor -- will have to dig deep into their reserves to outwit and outdo each other as they traverse the Klang Valley in search of answers to riddles and hidden treasures.

The stakes are high for this exciting and challenging event, which will kick off from Dataran Merdeka.

At the end of the hunt, the second time it is being held following its huge success last year, a team will drive away with a Polo Sedan valued at RM100,000, sponsored by Volkswagen Malaysia.

The champion in each category will take home RM5,000.

"We have more teams and participants compared with last year's 231. In fact, some entries had to be rejected as the numbers had exceeded our target."

A combination of skills and luck, said Chok, was needed to win the Polo Sedan.

"The three champions will draw lots to determine who will drive home the Polo Sedan."

She said regular New Sunday Times readers held an advantage over non-readers as 10 questions would be based on the paper.

"I am sure regular readers can find the answers quickly, which means they will have more time to tackle other questions."

Petronas is the fuel sponsor while Putrajaya Corporation is the venue sponsor. The clerk-of-course is Purple Antz.

More sponsorships for the hunt

BIGGER AND BETTER: Trickier challenges, enticing prizes in store for this year's participants

QSR Brands group corporate communications general manager Rosniza
Baharum presented the company's sponsorship of RM10,000 to New
Sunday Times editor Chok Suat Ling.

KUALA LUMPUR: THREE sponsors of  the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2013 have presented their sponsorship for next Sunday's much-awaited event.

They are top brokerage house Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd, telecommunications giant Celcom Axiata Bhd and retail food industry leader QSR Brands (M) Holdings Sdn Bhd.

Kenanga sponsored RM10,000 in cash and an RM10,000 investment trading account.

Its head of equity broking and executive director, Lee Kok Khee, said Kenanga was excited to be part of the motor hunt, especially after the tremendous response it received during the inaugural event last year.

"There are people in Kenanga who are very passionate and enthusiastic about motor hunts. The New Sunday Times Motor Hunt gives them an opportunity to pit their skills and ability against other teams," said Lee, adding that Kenanga would send four teams to compete.

He said the idea of giving a prize of RM10,000 in an investment trading account was in the hope that the company, which is ranked by Bursa Malaysia's Participating Organisations Trading Summary as the largest independent investment bank in the country by equity trading volume and value as at Nov 30 last year, would forge a longer relationship with the winners by allowing them to "grow" their money in equity trading.

Lee presented the sponsorship to New Sunday Times assistant editor P. Selvarani in a brief ceremony on Wednesday.

"The hunt was said to be very challenging last year. We intend to maintain the standard this year, yet, we promise it will be a fun and exciting event," said Selvarani.

Last year, the hunt attracted 231 teams with more than 900 participants, marking it as the biggest motor hunt in the country in recent years.

In another ceremony at Balai Berita, Celcom communication media/industry relations head Rohizan Ismail presented the company's sponsorship to New Straits Times news editor Leslie Andres.

The sponsorship included a LG-Prada mobile phone, BlackBerry Torch, Samsung Galaxy Mini and four units of Celcom PortaWifi.

Rohizan said the sponsorship was to reciprocate the support shown to Celcom by the New Straits Times Press (NSTP) group.

"We are grateful for the support given to us and our participation in this event is our way of saying 'thank you'.

"We also hope that the sponsorship will not only enhance the relationship between Celcom and NSTP, but also help make the motor hunt a bigger and better event."

Rohizan added that Celcom would consider increasing its sponsorship next year.

The service provider group is sending two teams to compete in this year's hunt.

QSR Brands group corporate communications general manager Rosniza Baharum presented the company's sponsorship of RM10,000 to New Sunday Times editor Chok Suat Ling.

Rosniza said the company, which operates the KFC, Pizza Hut and RasaMas restaurant chains, was pleased to be part of an event which strengthens relationships and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

"Events such as the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt are in line with our philosophy of promoting family bonding and values, which is why we regard the event as interesting and beneficial."

Expressing hope that this year's hunt would be a major success, Rosniza said QSR Brands was grateful that it had been given the chance to be associated with the event.

The grand prize for the hunt is a Volkswagen Polo Sedan, valued at RM100,000, sponsored by Volkswagen Group Malaysia, the event's main sponsor.

The German car-maker is also sponsoring another RM50,000 for the hunt.

Petronas is the fuel sponsor, while Putrajaya Corporation is the venue sponsor.

Among the prizes up for grabs are return tickets to South Korea and China, courtesy of AirAsia X; several four-day/three-night Penang-Phuket-Krabi packages aboard the SuperStar Libra, courtesy of Star Cruises; mobile phones; home theatre sets; electrical and home appliances; hotel stays and beauty hampers.

Other sponsors are Philips, UDA Holdings Bhd, BlackBerry, Sime Darby, Tesco, Hyatt Regency Kuantan Resort, Banana Boat, Epson, Holiday Villa Hotels & Resorts, Sushi King, Estee Lauder, Select-TV Solutions Sdn Bhd, Jireh Consult, Bank Rakyat, Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, RapidKL, Maybank, Exim Bank, Kraft Foods Malaysia, Permodalan Nasional Bhd, Edaran Tan Chong Motor, Permanis Sandilands, Melvita and Genting Malaysia Berhad.

Participants will be flagged off from Dataran Merdeka, with the event ending in Putrajaya.

The champion of each category will take home RM5,000.

as the grand prize for the motor hunt

KUALA LUMPUR: The grand prize winner of the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2013 will once again drive away with a Volkswagen Polo Sedan worth RM100,000.

The German carmaker came aboard as the main sponsor for the second year running for the country's biggest motor hunt on June 16.

Volkswagen Group Malaysia managing director Dr Zeno Kerschbaumer presented the sponsorship of the blue Volkswagen Polo Sedan 1.6 and another RM50,000 to NSTP group managing editor Datuk Abdul Jalil Hamid at the Volkswagen showroom in Bangsar here yesterday.

Kerschbaumer said the company was honoured to support the event for the second consecutive year.

"We are proud that the New Sunday Times has given us the opportunity to once again be a part of the biggest motor hunt in the country and enhance the popularity of both the NST and our group."

He said the group chose to sponsor a Polo Sedan as it was the most important model in its line-up as it was a car that served everyone. He said the fuel-efficient model, which was fully assembled in Malaysia, was the first Volkswagen car priced below RM100,000.

To reinforce its support for the hunt, Volkswagen is sending in four teams, comprising of 16 participants this year, compared with two teams last year.

Jalil, who thanked Volkswagen, said the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt was a fun-filled event which saw the participation of people from all walks of life.

Win trips to China, South Korea

UP FOR GRABS: Cruise packages, hotel stays, home appliances and unit trust shares

Busan in South Korea is a bustling city of 3.6 million people with a
wide array of attractions.

KUALA LUMPUR: PARTICIPANTS in the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2013 stand a chance of winning return tickets to South Korea and China, courtesy of AirAsia X.

The budget airline is offering four tickets to Busan, South Korea, and two tickets to Hangzhou, China. AirAsia X flies to the second largest city in South Korea four times a week, using its A330-300 aircraft. Located on the southwestern tip of the Korean peninsula, Busan is a bustling city of 3.6 million people with a wide array of attractions.

As for Hangzhou, which is the capital and largest city of Zhejiang province in eastern China, the airline operates several weekly flights, also using the Airbus A330.

The airline tickets has enlarged the pool of prizes to be won by participants in the hunt, scheduled on June 16. Besides the grand prize of a Volkswagen Polo sedan, sponsored by Volkswagen Group Malaysia and cash, other prizes up for grabs are cruise packages, handphones, electrical and home appliances, hotel stays, beauty hampers and even unit trust shares and investment trust accounts.

The main sponsor of the hunt is Volkswagen Group Malaysia while Putrajaya Corporation is the venue sponsor. Other companies which have confirmed their participation are Philips, K & N Kenanga Holdings Bhd, BlackBerry, Celcom, QSR Brands (M) Holdings, Sime Darby, Tesco, Star Cruises, UDA Holdings Berhad, Hyatt Regency Kuantan Resort, Banana Boat, Epson, Holiday Villa Hotels & Resorts, Sushi King, Estee Lauder, Select-TV Solutions Sdn Bhd, Jireh Consult, Bank Rakyat, Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, RapidKL, Maybank, EXIM Bank and Kraft Foods Malaysia.

New Sunday Times editor Chok Suat Ling said the hunt is divided into three categories to ensure a level playing field.

"Experienced teams, known as 'masters' in the hunt fraternity, will battle it out among their peers. It is amazing to know that many of these teams have been taking part in treasure hunts for decades.

"Therefore, to give the less experienced and new teams a chance to win, the beginner category was created."

Chok said the media and sponsor category was created in recognition of the support given by sponsors and media to the event.

She said the New Sunday Times was proud of the fact that it was the only treasure hunt in the country offering a car as the grand prize.

For the second year running, participants stand a chance to drive back home a Volkswagen Polo sedan. The sponsorship of the Polo sedan, which was launched last year, reflected the
close relationship between Volkswagen and the New Straits Times Press.

Volkwagen also sponsored a Polo sedan for the inaugural edition of the hunt last year, the biggest ever held in the country.

It attracted 231 teams with more than 900 participants, marking it as the biggest motor hunt in the country in recent years.

Primera, a team of four colleagues which won the hunt's beginner category, led by Muhammad Sani Mohd Noor, took home the Polo sedan valued at about RM100,000, together with RM5,000.

Besides the car, Volkswagen is also sponsoring RM50,000 for the hunt this year.

Registration for the hunt is now ongoing. The closing date for submission of entries is on June 7, and for registration via post, entries must reach the organisers before June 10.

Registration forms will be available in the New Straits Times and New Sunday Times until June 7.

The motor treasure hunt will involve teams working together to answer questions and riddles, and obtain hidden treasures.

The half-day affair, which is divided into three categories -- regulars, beginners, and members of the media and sponsors -- will take participants to several areas in the Klang Valley.

The champions in each category will take home RM5,000.

Prizes will be awarded up to the fifth position in the regular and media/sponsors categories, while for beginners, it goes right up to the 30th position.

This year's edition is scheduled to be held on June 16. It will be a half-day event which will take hunters to several areas in the Klang Valley where they have to answer riddles and obtain hidden treasures.

Congrats to the winning team!
Organisers please note

1) Not providing enough food for participants is most horrible / terrible

2) COC taking nearly 3 hours to tabulate scores is unforgivable.

Otherwise - the hunt was well and good.

New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2013 organising committee said...

We would like to thank all those who participated in the New Sunday Times Motor Hunt yesterday. Truly, your support for the hunt is greatly appreciated and we hope it will continue for all future hunts.
On our part, we would like to apologise for all the shortcomings. We have taken note of all feedback and rest assured they will be addressed in all future hunts and during our post-mortem.
The tabulation of scores took some time due to the large number of participants and many tie-breakers, and we wanted to be sure that there would be no mistakes in the final tally.
Once again, thank you...the hunt was only possible with all your support.

NST need to look on promoting or a way to promote the beginners champion to regular category. We have 2 members from the 2012 NST Open Champion winning again with 2 different people. Muhamad Sani and Mohd Redzuan.
