TOP GEAR TREASURE HUNT 2012 - News

Extracted from TopGear Malaysia magazine (Dec 2012 edition)
THAT PESKY FREED

Some labour for hours to hunt it down, but even for them it’s another hunt to remember!

After months of anticipation, avid treasure hunt enthusiasts and, more importantly, fans of TopGear Malaysia finally came together for this year’s edition of the TopGear Treasure Hunt. As with last year’s hunt, the annual event kicked off at Citra Mall, Selangor. The destination this time was Hydro Hotel in Batu Ferringhi, Penang.

It was never going to be a clear-cut path to the Pearl of the Orient. A series of challenges meant that participants had to make several stops along the way.

Final Briefing

Here we go!!!!!!!

The first stop was Tanjung Malim, home to many signboards of business that held some of the valuable answers to questions the participants were required to solve. In the spirit of all things challenging, the way in which the questions were phrased kept many participants puzzled for long hours, but determined nonetheless as they chased prizes worth over RM65,000 that awaited the top 20 teams.

Ipoh was the next stop. Here, they were required to spot the TopGear Treasure Hunt Honda Freed which was roaming the streets of Ipoh. While some were quick to locate the most wanted car of the day, some had to labour for hours before setting their eyes on it. That wasn’t really an issue because winners of the hunt were judged based on points rather than the time in which they completed the tasks. Therefore, many of those who had time to spare took a break in Ipoh to decipher even more questions and clues before heading to the next stop enroute to Penang.

Before reaching the tollgates of the Penang Bridge, our treasure hunters had to make one last stop – the Caltex service station at Bukit Gantang’s northbound rest area. Here, skills with the fuel pump were put to the test as our hunters had to re-fuel their cars with as close to RM7.50 worth of fuel as they could muster in a single action.

All they had to do was to stop pumping
at RM7.50. How hard can it be?

Almost got it!

Once all the key challenges were done, everyone made their way to Penang and as the tired participants checked in at Hydro Hotel eager to go up to their rooms for a bath and a nap, we surprised them with one last challenge devised by one of our sponsors – Jeep apparel.

Jeep Apparel's challenge left a few
 hunters stumped

The challenge was to reconstruct pieces of clothing with whatever fabric given, all within a strict time limit.

The hunt concluded with a dinner at the hotel’s Crystal ballroom which filled up very quickly. Most of the participants were after all famished from a day’s worth of travelling and head-cracking.

As the participants dined, the solutions to the questions that troubled them for most of the day were revealed, to the joy of some and the frustration of others.

At the end of the day, team OMG (Oh My Gear) took home the grand prize consisting of RM4,000 cash sponsored by Honda, Certina timepieces worth RM10,040 and Sheaffer pens worth RM4,000. A total of 20 teams were awarded prizes sponsored by Honda, Caltex, Jeep, Motor Takaful and many more. The prizes were presented by Hezeri Samsuri and Louis Foo, Editor and Publisher of TopGear Malaysia respectively. All in all, we wrapped up what was truly a successful and memorable TopGear Treasure Hunt and now we can start counting down to what 2013 has in store for us. Till we meet again next year!
