Well…another year finally ends! As the curtain falls on 2014, let’s glance back at yet another amazing year of treasure hunts. With more than 70 events, hunters could really pick and choose when it comes to treasure hunting.
Whether these were purely the cryptic type, or hunts with challenges; whether these were for learning purpose (such as THS Gold hunts) or the ones with grand prizes (such as NST Motor Hunt 2014); whether these were just walk hunts or inter-state overnight adventures, everyone would have their favourite precious moments.
For the major hunts, we have the usual NST Motor Hunt 2014 (which offered a bigger grand prize this time), TNT Charity Hunt 2014, Kiwanis Charity Hunt 2014 and even TopGear Treasure Hunt 2014. There were also several World Cup-related hunts during 2014.

Top 10 Memorable Hunt Moments
1. Perfect 10 Milestone for THS Tulip
When THS quarterly Tulip newsletter was initiated back in mid-2012, there was a concern about how long it can be sustained. The constant challenge facing this first treasure hunt e-magazine in Malaysia was the dedication and continuous contribution of articles from hunters who worked tirelessly behind the scene.Well… as THS Tulip celebrated its 10th issue in October 2014, the tribute must certainly go to this pool of writers and columnists. It wasn’t easy for them to juggle between the writing commitment and other daily priorities, so kudos for them for keeping it going till today.
2. HNN Hall of Fame
HNN has finally established its own Hall of Fame on 27th Dec 2014 (read here). After 4 years (2011-2014) of persistent data compilation of hunt results from all over Malaysia, HNN can now give tribute to all the regular winners.
The journey of data compilation wasn't plain sailing and the challenges were aplenty. At times the hunt organizers would choose to ignore the request for results, some COCs didn't keep proper records and lots of follow up were needed for the feedback. Thankfully some COCs were understanding and a few hunters helped to supply the result and podium photos.
To set up the Hall of Fame, HNN gave recognition to the pre-2011 winners by adopting the names already identified in TOS (Time Out Solutions) Hall Of Fame. Then the regular winners during 2011-2014 (compiled from HNN Past Results) were added to make it up-to-date.
Of course, the set-up of HNN Hall of Fame was the first step; much is still required to keep the list constantly updated. Much co-operation will still be needed from various parties.
3. Clai-Min a Successful Year in 2014
This year the Top 2 hunters go to the hunters Liong Chian Min and Claire Chin, who between them were champions in as many as 21 hunts. Individually Chian Min clinched victory 12 times, while Claire Chin came in second with 10. Quite a remarkable achievement indeed!
While Chian Min emerged champion in several northern hunts (such as Sanuk Hunt, Charis Hospice Hunt, Rapid Penang Hunt, 1st Avenue Merdeka Hunt), World Tourism Hunt in Johor, THS Walk Hunts in Penang, Ipoh and KL, Claire won the notable TNT Charity Hunt 2014 and SICB Hunt with A Heart 2014.
They also hunted together in THS Ipoh Walk Hunt and George Town BIDS Amazing Hunt 2014.
4. Most Promising Beginners

The team of Ling Liong Ang, Rachel Chia, Sally Yap, Lin Wei Nyin and Fong Choon Kit has been exceptionally outstanding this year. They (LLA/LWN/RC/SY) won Eye Q Mensa Hunt (Mar) and BK Media Charity Hunt 2014 (May).
The team also clinched Top Gear Motor Hunt 2014 (Nov) (FCK/LLA/LWN/ RC) and TNT Charity Hunt 2014 (Nov) (FCK/LLA/ RC/ SY), as well as emerging runner up in NST Motor Hunt 2014 (Sep) (LLA/LWN).

Chin Beng Seng and Goh Mee Mee also undoubtedly garnered our vote this time, as both of them (together Anthony Wong and Lee Kean Hoo) emerged champion in NST Motor Hunt 2014 (Beginner Category) and 1st Runner Up in TNT Charity Hunt 2014. Goh Mee Mee herself also won the THS Tulip Armchair Hunt – Sofa Category twice during 2014.

5. Unique Augmented Reality Hunt and Tower 2 Tower Explorace
Among so many events, two most unique hunts this year must be YouthJam Augmented Reality Hunt 2014 and Tower 2 Tower Explorace 2014.
YouthJam Augmented Reality Hunt was held in Penang on 14th Sep and easily attracted more than 1,400 hunters from various countries. The hunt concept heavily relied on the Augmented Reality application of Wallipop, which enabled common billboards, wall paintings and pictures to hide messages.This surely provided another dimension of unpredictability as they had to race against time and diligently search for such boards (Read here for more info)
While YouthJam hunt used mobile apps to engage hunters, Tower 2 Tower Explorace 2014 was based on the Monopoly game. By completing various challenges and answering questions, hunters earned 'money'; which can be saved to buy land properties. Just like Monopoly concept, hunters can increase the property values by buying lands in colour sets.
What made this even more interesting was that sometimes hunters may need to trade with others if they want to acquire the desired property for their investment portfolio.
What an experience indeed!
6. More Milestone for HNN
With HNN visitors fast approaching 300,000 since its inception in February 2011, it has been an encouraging record, with average 200 visitors daily.
HNN definitely appreciates the popularity of the blog and aspires to continuously improve with more features, starting with HNN Hall of Fame (pls read Pt 2 above).
7. COC of 13 Hunts
It must have been a busy year for Jayaram Menon, who became COC for 13 open hunts during 2014.
He conducted 8 THS Walk Hunts (4 in Ipoh, 3 in Penang and 1 in KL), Mensa Eye-Q Hunt, 1st Avenue Merdeka Hunt and Shamelin Mall Fun Hunt. Under his company, Road Runners, he also organized Charis Hospice Hunt 2014 and GeorgeTown BIDS Amazing Hunt.
Of course, such efforts brought much joy to Ipoh participants, where hunts are seldom held. You can read more here.
If you recall, we have mentioned in the past that the traditional Grand Slam hunts have been Putrajaya Hunt, Kiwanis Treasure Hunt, Mensa Hunt and theSun Motor Hunt. Perhaps with the continuous absence (dare I say, demise) of theSun Motor Hunt, most hunters would readily agree that New Sunday Times Motor Hunt to be the right substitute.
With the mounting influence of New Sunday Times Motor Hunt after 3 years, one must surely consider it worthy of Grand Slam status with huge followings and grand prizes.

The annual Top Gear Motor Hunt made a return this year, after a hiatus in 2013 (read here). Similarly TNT Charity Hunt and Johor International Hunt (aka World Tourism Day Treasure Hunt for 2014) were also growing in stature.
The notable ones that missed the boat this year must be the annual NPC Hunt and THS Motor Hunt. While there was no news on NPC Hunt, THS Motor Hunt was unfortunately postponed to 2015 at last minute.
9. Potong Corner with Jetta!
The biggest winner of this year must surely go to the team Potong Corner team (Fazliana Ibrahim, Hanim Muhili, Mohd Sharil Dukli, Salehuddin Yusof) who won the grand prize of New Sunday Times Motor Hunt 2014, a Volkswagen Jetta.
As the champion of the Media/Sponsor category, they had the customary chance to bag the grand prize in a lucky draw, together with the champion of the Beginner and Regular categories. It appeared that they were the lucky one this time.
"We are excited and happy to win the Volkswagen Jetta and first prize in the category. We are keen treasure hunters and had joined many such events in the past. We consider this as one of the toughest hunts in view of the time constraint and standard of the questions" said the team spokesman Hanim, when interviewed.

10. World Cup Fever
This list wouldn't be complete without a special mention of the hunts for special occasion. With 2014 as the year for World Cup football, there was a flurry of activities relating to this event, and treasure hunt was no exception. HNN recorded as many as 3 such hunts.
It started with World Cup Fever Motor Hunt (on 15th June), followed by World Cup Rhythm Treasure Hunt 2014 (on 22nd June) and Time Out World Cup Hunt 2014 (on 5th July).
Come to think of it, even THS KL Walk Hunt 2014 Leg 1 was closely linked to the beautiful game itself.
