PENANG TOWARDS A SHOPPING PARADISE WALK HUNT 2012 - News

Heritage treasure hunt is back

A TOTAL of 155 teams had a fun time roaming around the George Town heritage zone in Penang, looking for clues.

The teams of three were taking part in the Penang Towards A Shopping Paradise treasure hunt organised by the Young Malaysians Movement (YMM) Penang branch.

The hunt was sponsored by Cititel, 100 Plus, Prangin Mall and Bread History.

To solve the historical puzzles and anagrams given to them, the participants had to look for clues on the signboards of retail shops in inner George Town.

Event organising chairman Eric Tan said this was the second hunt organised by the YMM since the inaugural one in 2005.

He said the objective of this year’s hunt was to promote Penang as a historical attraction and a shopping paradise.

“We hope to spread awareness for Penang to gain free port status.

“We could not organise the trea-sure hunt after 2005 as there was no funding.

“We hope to continue organising more hunts after this.

“The response this year was encouraging,” he said.

The teams were given a briefing on tips to read the clues given before the 8am flag-off by Bukit Bendera Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye.

The hunt started and ended at Prangin Mall.

The first prize of RM1,500 went to Team Triforce while Team Casper came second to win RM1,200.

Both teams also received trophies and digital frames.

The Handsome Team won the third prize of RM900, a trophy and digital photo frames.

Consolation prizes of RM3,000 were given to 20 teams.

Pulau Betong assemblyman Muhammad Farid Saad, Komtar Barisan coordinator Loh Chye Teik and Sungai Pinang coordinator Dr Thor Teong Ghee gave away the prizes.
