What a year it was at the world of treasure hunt in 2011!As we sang "Auld Lang Syne" at the stroke of midnight to celebrate the New Year, it's interesting to reflect on the events of 2011!
For treasure hunters, it has been a year of mounting excitement and thrill, with a few valleys of disappointments!
HNN would like to bid farewell to 2011, with hunt images, news and reflections on this memorable year.
Here's a look at the great fun, disappointments and the promising future of treasure hunts!
Fun and Thrill
2011 ushered in the much-anticipated return of Putrajaya Treasure Hunt, one of the Grand Slam events that mysteriously went into hibernation 3 years ago! The timely event certainly made up for the void caused by the ongoing absence of theSun Motor Hunt.
Likewise ANZGAM Hunt also staged a comeback, after a hiatus of 6 years.
The two servings of ‘Hunting for Meals on Wheels’ certainly lived up to its billing, with great food for the brain and tummy. More importantly, hunters delectably tasted the questions concocted by Chong Voon Keat and virgin COC Teoh Cheow Teong. Yummy… yummy! More feasts please!!
More good news greeted the hunters during the 2nd half of 2011. While a few new organisers arrived on the hunt scene (notably KFC Edu-Fun Unit, with 2 hunts within a period of 6 months), an existing hunt organiser, Nissan decided to triple the frequency of its hunt in 2011, much to the delight of hunters in the southern and northern regions.
How Disappointing!
From the accusation of collaboration, to the mystifying definition of beginner and the horrendous incompetency of certain hunt organisers, 2011 has its fair share of the disappointments too.
The age-old issue of ‘Pakatan’ among hunters was put under microscope during a Kota Kinabalu hunt in February. The matter was hotly debated; with opinion split among the hunters; from scathing criticisms from hunt purists, to the "we-can't-stop-them" feedbacks.
The definition of beginner was revisited too, when a few newcomers bitterly complained that master hunters gate-crashed their ‘parties’ in several novice hunts.
The arguments swung from one end to another like a pendulum, ranging from inept COCs who unwittingly issued the invitation cards to the regular hunters, to the greedy masters selfishly snatching ‘candies’ from the baby hunters and the gaping loophole in the definition of beginner. The consensual conclusion seemed to be a need for proper guideline and tighter definition.
Of course, the competency of several hunt organisers was also called into question!
While a few hunters unfortunately received cold treatment from organiser and decided to give up 'Ice Cream', laughter proved to be the best medicine when a goofy COC inexplicably employed unorthodox methods to punish hunters, with comical consequences in an October charity hunt. For the poor souls, they must have looked at the lighter side of the matter and decided to laugh it off.

There were growing concerns of the ongoing absence of theSun Motor Hunt for 2nd consecutive year. One gets the feeling that without suitable sponsors, we may have seen the last of this wonderful Mother of All Hunts.
A few much-anticipated hunts went missing during 2011. Most notably in December, Courts Amazing Treasure Hunt 2011 and Melaka Wonderland Treasure Hunt 2011 were cancelled at the 11th hour.
The Promising Future of Treasure Hunts!
The first one was the birth of Treasure Hunt Society of Malaysia (THS); which was formed to develop guidelines on the sport and assist budding hunters to hone their skills.
Since its inception in February, HNN has attracted more than 25,000 visitors during 2011, and fast becoming one of the main sites for hunt-related information.
More and more COCs increasingly came up with thematic hunts to suit the occasions and make the hunt adventure all the more rewarding. You get angpows from Uncle Chong's Rabbit Run Hunt during CNY 2011, celebrate Pavaram Deepavali Hunt during Festival of Light, experience spooky Hantu Hunt during Halloween and look forward to the presents of Jingle Bell Hunt during Christmas.
Definitely a positive development for the future hunts!
