LIFE & TIMES TRAVEL KL FABULOUS FOOD HUNT 2013 - News

Extracted from New Straits Times (31st Oct 2013)
Chomping their way to Adelaide

Jaw muscles working overtime to fill empty tummies. The KL Fabulous Food Hunt 2013 leave Shuib Taib and Khairul Ashraf Kammed open-mouthed with awe...

BLOWING HOT AND COLD

THEY were hungry. They were raring to go. Last Saturday, 600 participants of KL Fabulous Food Hunt 1Malaysia 2013 combed the city streets in search of the best eateries.

Organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture FT KL/Putrajaya Office and the Life and Times Travel desk of the New Straits Times, the event began at Lanai Matic in Jalan Ampang and ended at Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

It was launched by the Ministry’s deputy secretary general, Rashidi Hasbullah.
The rules were simple: Eat and move on to the next checkpoint until all the tasks were completed.

The reward: The champions get RM5,000 and return flight tickets for four to Adelaide, Australia. First and second runners-up take home RM3,000 and RM1,500 respectively.
There were nine checkpoints (in no particular order) and three treasures.  Here were some of the highlights.

1. LEAVING NO CRAB UNTURNED
It was smiles all around when participants found out that one of the tasks was to eat crab curry noodle and drink a glass of cold rose syrup at Mi Ketam KL, Jalan Keramat. They went berserk.
At the restaurant, we zoomed in on Nice, Sexy Team a.k.a. NST (the team came in second overall).

Urged on by taxi driver Kenny Hong whom they met only that morning and decided to hire for the day, team member Zamil Ariff Zahari left no crab unturned as he gobbled up the mi ketam in a jiffy. What caught our attention was the enthusiastic support from Hong.

“Tak payah habiskan kuah. Makan mee saja! (no need to finish gravy, eat only noodles),” he bellowed at Zamil who, despite the advice, drank the soup so quickly that some of it spilled on his shirt!

LEAVING NO CRAB UNTURNED

2. ROTI CANAI TARIK!
We’ve all had roti canai soaked in curry but roti canai soaked in curry and teh tarik? Mind you, even for roti canai fans, that had to be a first. We caught this at Restoran NZ Curry House, Jalan Wangsa Delima.

The adventurous participant simply poured the teh tarik on her roti and curry to save precious time. And what a potent combination!

3. BLOWING HOT AND COLD
Hainanese toast and hot kopi-O awaited at Kopitiam Encik Tan in Rampai Business Park. A typical choice for breakfast or tea, most participants dipped the toast into the coffee for easy swallowing. This was probably one of the easiest tasks. What was tough was the scalding hot coffee, but participants rose to the challenge by pouring it into the saucer to cool before drinking.

4. NO PIECE OF CAKE!
Due to its close proximity to Lanai Matic, Shazana Pau & Cafe in Jalan Raja Alang, Kampung Baru was where many teams headed first.

The task: Two pau (red bean and kaya) with a mug of steaming hot coffee. Teams had to pick one member to down this — as fast as they can.

5. FINISH YOUR GREENS
“Vegetables are good for you. Eat.” Remember being told this by your parents? At Restoran Nasi Ayam Kampung A. Hassan in Jalan Dataran Velodrom, one participant took mum’s advice so seriously that instead of just eating the seeds of petai (Parkia speciosa or stinky beans), she gobbled everything, pods and all.

Added to that were ulam raja (Cosmos caudatus or king’s salad), budu (fermented fish sauce), fried kampung chicken, rice and iced lemon tea. As it was near lunch time, none of the participants had problems finishing everything.

6. HOT YET SCRUMPTIOUS
Sambal belacan (ground chilli condiment) is a favourite with locals.
The only hitch here was locating Restoran Samre in Jalan Pantai Dalam. Participants later told the organisers that this was the hardest checkpoint as the route was confusing.

7. NASI LEMAK. NOW ANYONE CAN EAT
The logo was definitely AirAsia. But instead of enjoying a meal thousands of feet above sea level, participants checked in at its booth in Central Market for its famous nasi lemak Pak Nasser and chicken satay (five sticks) with nasi himpit and kuah kacang.

NASI LEMAK. NOW ANYONE CAN EAT

A double dose of rice was a Herculean task for anyone, even those with regular appetites.

8. KEEP IT COMING
The crowd at Petronas station in Jalan Maarof gave it a festive air. At the Rojak And Cendol Salleh van, the owner worked his arm power to continuously shave ice for the sweet dessert laden with creamy coconut milk and gula melaka as well as dish up rojak mamak. Each time, one team finished the task, another turned up and he had to repeat his chores.  But now, thanks to the Fabulous Food hunters, his business is the talk of the town.

9. SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST
Budget Good-Good team was feeling good as it arrived at the last checkpoint way before the rest. Then the competition heated up as teams Quadruple L and NST arrived within a minute of each other.

Quadruple L was in a comfortable second position as one member took his time to complete the last meal of the day: A plate of hot yong tau fu with cili padi, ice-cream potong and a can of 100 Plus.

SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST

But it panicked when NST showed up, anchored by a determined Zamil (yes, the very same person who gobbled up mi ketam) who rose to the challenge once more and overtook Loi Teik Ooi in the last challenge.

THE TREASURES
1. Grab at a copy of the day’s NST
They had to find a missing piece of the event logo and solve a quiz  (answers could be found in Life & Times).

2. Team Picture at Jelatek LRT Station
The teams had to snap their pictures at the station, post them on the social networking site, Facebook and tag each team member with the title Life & Times Travel KL Fabulous Food 1 Malaysia Hunt 2013.

Team Picture at Jelatek LRT Station

3. Team Picture at Central Market Checkpoint
The teams snapped their pictures at Central Market, posted them on the social networking site, Facebook and tagged each team member with the title Life & Times Travel KL Fabulous Food 1 Malaysia Hunt 2013.

THE WINNERS

1st: BUDGET GOOD-GOOD
Due to a technical problem, Budget Good Good did not win the KL Fabulous Food Hunt last year but finished a disappointing fourth. But the members were not fazed.

“We were very disappointed last year, so this year we really wanted to win. Our strategy was simple. We would start from the farthest checkpoint and work our way to the finish. We are so happy to have finally won. Yes, we will definitely defend the title next year,” said Ahmad Daud Abdul Manan. Team members Mohd Fakri Ghazali, Anora Frezylah Abd Rahim and Rizuan Ismail could hardly contain their excitement.

2nd: NICE, SEXY TEAM
It being their first time taking part in the competition, the team that spoilt the party for Quadruple L weren’t really sure what to expect.

“We just love to eat!” said Azuan Ahmad Zahdi. The team arrived at the last checkpoint in third position but Zamil Ariff Zahari was determined to overtake Quadruple L.

“It was do-or-die. I didn’t want to let my team down,” said Ariff, who jumped on taxi driver Kenny Hong after coming in second. His team members, Nurjihan Fadzil and Norhanis Nai, were just as excited.

3rd: QUADRUPLE L
Last year they came in second. This year they lost their position at the last minute. Naturally Lau Sai Yew, Lin Wei Nyin, Jeff Wong and Loi Teik Ooi were feeling a little deflated but still, they managed to see the bright side.

“Of course we are a little disappointed but we are in the top three and that’s still cause for celebration,” said Sai Yew.

Teik Ooi chipped in: “Next year, we will come back and claim the title.”

The unforgettable four

THERE is nothing wrong with wanting to stand out. At the Life&Times’ Kuala Lumpur Fabulous Food Hunt 2013 last Saturday, several teams took the initiative to show their individuality and creativity.

Although they did not win, they definitely caught the attention of the public and the rest of the participants. Here are our top four picks:

TEAM AFRO
When asked why they wore an Afro wig, they candidly replied that they wanted their pictures to be published in the New Straits Times. Well, they certainly achieved that goal.

Team Afro
8TV QUICKIE TEAM
With his track record of eating with passion in the Best In The World programme on 8TV, naturally people wanted to see if Razif Hashim (far right) lived up to his reputation.
Joining him were 8TV Quickie host Jun Yong (second from right), Khaleeq Sarfaraz and Razy’s manager, Ely.

8TV Quickie Team

3 KAMPUNG BOYS & A FRENCH MAN
This was the only team with a Mat Salleh and the latter did really well to finish the set of white rice, gulai kawah kambing (mutton curry cooked in a large wok), stir-fried bean sprouts and sambal belacan.

3 Kampung Boys & A French Man

GENG GELOJOH
Choosing a name which means gluttony, the four women wore a chef’s hat each, decorated with a fork and a spoon. If there was a category for best dressed team, this team will definitely be in the judges’ good books.

A blast from the start

THE recent KL Fabulous Food Hunt 2013 was a blast. It started with high spirits at Lanai Matic in Jalan Ampang and ended with full bellies at Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur in Jalan Putra.

Co-organised by the New Straits Times and Ministry of Tourism and Culture FT KL/Putrajaya office, the event took the city by storm.

9am: Registration
The calm of the morning turned into a carnival at Lanai Matic. In just 40 minutes, the field was awash with 600 hunters, all wearing the bright royal blue event T-shirts. It was exciting, especially when we spotted the familiar faces of those who took part in last year’s event.

10.45am: Strategising

Head marshall Kheirul Nazib started with a briefing but kept it short and sweet before handing task sheets to the team leaders.

Participants used the remaining minutes before the official flag-off to work out a strategy for their routes. Altogether, there were nine checkpoints scattered all over the city and three treasures (Read full story on the checkpoints and treasures on pages 12-13).

10.55am: Flashmob attack
To spice things up, the organisers had recruited an eight-member band and a 10-member dance troupe to entertain those present. But the Visit Malaysia 2014 flashmob group only had a short shot at fame when the participants decided to join them for a share of the limelight.

The performance was witnessed by guest of honour, Rashidi Hasbullah, deputy secretary general (Tourism Industry) of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. He was joined by New Straits Times managing editor Mustapha Kamil and director of Domestic Marketing Division, Tourism Malaysia Datuk Musa Yusof, and others.

11.15am: Go, go, go
As colourful VMY2014 balloons were released into the air, all teams rushed to the Start point at the end of the field. “Ready, get set, GO!” and the horn blasted at exactly 11.15am. The hungry hunters were off!

2.14pm: And the winner is...
The officials and marshals perked up when they heard loud cheers coming from Jalan Putra. Budget Good Good was the first team in, 30 minutes before the deadline. But they still had one final task to complete, courtesy of Seri Pacific Hotel. This was obviously a piece of cake... or in this case, yong tau fu, for the team member picked for the task, finished the plate of steamy and spicy yong tau fu, ice cream and cold carbonated drink within five minutes.

2.45pm: More to come
One by one, the teams began coming in to finish their last task. When all teams had come in, the post-hunt fun slowly started. To heat up the already hot afternoon was the much-awaited lucky draw sessions (98 prizes in total!), Fear Factor-like eating games and entertainment by  Akulastik, a four-member busker group.

4pm: All’s well that ends well
The afternoon session reached its peak with the prize-giving ceremony for the top 30 teams.

Champions Budget Good Good received RM5,000 and return AirAsia X tickets for four to Adelaide, Australia. Lucky draw prizes included AirAsia and AirAsia X flight tickets, stays at five-star resorts and electrical items from Panasonic Malaysia.

New Straits Times Press (M) Berhad group managing editor Datuk Abdul Jalil Hamid and VMY2014 Secretariat general manager Yahati Awang were present at the event.

KL FOOD HUNT: Participants seek and savour dishes at 9 famous eateries

Flag-Off!!!!

KUALA LUMPUR: THE city was painted blue yesterday as more than 600 foodies from all walks of life invaded the streets for the Life and Times' Travel KL Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Hunt 2013.

As soon as they were flagged off by Tourism and Culture Ministry deputy secretary-general Rashidi Hasbullah in Jalan Ampang here, the participants, in blue shirts, began to hunt for nine famous city eateries using the clues given to them.

The event, which was held for the third consecutive year, required participants to travel on foot or use public transport to complete the tasks at nine checkpoints and collect nine stamps before reaching the finishing line.

There was also a closed category for participants of media and sponsors, such as the New Straits Times, 8TV, Utusan Malaysia, Bernama, Harian Metro and AirAsia Bhd.

Among the tasks were to eat an in-flight meal of nasi lemak Pak Nasser at the AirAsia station in Central Market and a bowl of crab curry noodles at the Mi Ketam KL eatery in Jalan Keramat.

After hours of chomping, munching, swallowing, gulping and braving the scorching hot weather, the first team, Budget Good-Good, arrived at the final pit stop in the cosy ambience of Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

Ahmad Daud Abdul Manan, Mohd Fakri Ghazali, Anora Frezylah Abd Rahim and Rizuan Ismail emerged as the grand prize winners of RM5,000 and return flight tickets to Adelaide, Australia.

Second prize winner Nice Sexy Team, which took home RM3,000, said it was their strategy of swallowing everything without chewing that had pulled them through.

Third-placed team, Quadruple L, who came in second last year, walked away with RM1,500 as they were just seconds short from securing the same spot again.

The fourth and fifth prize winners took away RM1,000 and RM800, respectively, while those placed 6th to 10th won RM500, 11th to 20th won RM300 and 21st to 30th won RM200.

Lucky participants also took home flight tickets, hotel stay packages, buffet dinners at luxury hotels, electrical items, gadgets and beauty products in a lucky draw.

The event was organised by the Tourism and Culture Ministry and the Life & Times Travel in conjunction with the Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Festival, which is held annually from October to December.

"We are happy as the turnout was beyond expectation. We would definitely plan for a bigger and more exciting one next year," said Life and Times associate editor Theresa Manavalan.

Tourism and Culture Ministry's KL-Putrajaya office director Zain Azrai Rashid said the event would be extended to international participants next year, including international media, to boost the tourism industry.

New Straits Times Press group managing editor Datuk Abdul Jalil Hamid and Visit Malaysia Year 2014 general manager Yahati Awang presented the prizes to the winners.

Bigger and better food hunt

Expect more participants and fun activities at the Life&Times Travel KL Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Hunt 2013, writes Hanna Hussein

IT’S all system go. Every detail planned for the country’s only food hunt is waiting to fall into places this Saturday.

The second Life&Times Travel KL Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Hunt 2013 will paint Kuala Lumpur a bright royal blue when it flags off 600 food hunters from Matic in Jalan Ampang.

Forming 150 teams of four each, the hunters, dressed in bright blue event T-shirts, will check-in at checkpoints in selected restaurants all over the city.

Event manager Narimah Samat of Red Adventure Sdn Bhd says that it will be a stiff race this year as there are more checkpoints with more challenging tasks.

“Having a huge appetite is a bonus. You also need to be fast and you must strategise your route and have a good game plan if you want to win this year,” she says.

Last year, some participants struggled at the last checkpoints as they had eaten too much earlier and so had to forced themselves to gobble down the food.

“It’s best that everyone in the team takes turns to complete the tasks this year because there will be more food and activities,” says Narimah who advises hunters to put their safety first and be prepared mentally and physically such as keeping hydrated throughout the hunt and wearing good walking shoes.

“Also, make sure that you prep up on the city’s best food places and the locations so that you can get a heads-up in the game.”

The organisers, Ministry of Tourism and Culture FT Office and New Straits Times, have promised a bigger and better food hunt this year.

This year, there are cash prizes worth RM18,800, compared to last year’s RM14,300 (for 120 teams).

AirAsia X will sponsor return flight tickets to Adelaide, Australia for each member of the winning team.

There will be mini games and busker performances at the finishing line at Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur in Jalan Putra.

“As participants wind down while waiting for the prize-giving ceremony, these fun games will give them a chance to win more prizes,” says Narimah.

Tips for food-hunters

Having a huge appetite is not all you need to win the Life & Times Travel KL Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Hunt 2013. Khairul Ashraf Kammed finds out more

THE Life & Times Travel KL Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Hunt 2013 is only a month away. So how should participants prepare themselves for the big day?

Is having a good appetite, being able to gobble your food and getting correct answers for every task good enough to win the grand prize?

Certainly not, says Narimah Samat, event manager at Red Adventure, the co-organiser of this year’s event which is responsible for designing the routes and challenges.

She says: “Food hunters should be prepared mentally and physically because they will be using a lot of energy to commute from one check point to the other both on foot and by public transport.

“It is important to keep hydrated during the hunt by drinking sufficient water. They should also have a light breakfast before the event. It is advisable to eat something before the competition. Don’t think that just because you will be eating a lot during the race, you don’t need to line your stomach first.”

Narimah stresses that team members should really strategise and that every member should play his or her part instead of relying  on a single member to take on the food quest.

“You wouldn’t want only one specific team mate to eat all the food at every stop, so much that he or she vomits at the end of the day, as what happened in the previous event,” she says.

This year, participants can expect more challenges. They should familiarise their way with some of the famous eating spots in Kuala Lumpur to test their eating capabilities and knowledge about local cuisine.

“Some of the questionnaires are specifically related to food, such as identifying a certain ingredient. The younger generation should brush up on their knowledge and familiarise themselves with local ingredients,” she says.

The food hunt, which will be held on Oct 26, will see 150 teams competing for prizes worth RM18,000. Non-participants can take part in mini-games near the finishing point to win attractive prizes.

Serunding sushi and more

Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur adds local flavours to both its cuisine and the KL Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Hunt 2013, writes Shuib Taib

APART from its strategic location near the LRT, Monorail and KTM Komuter stations, Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur’s other draw is its food.

During Ramadan, for instance, its range of local and international selections was a hit during buka puasa.

It has participated in the Malaysia International Gourmet Festival (MIGF) for the last two years.

“People associate us with good food. Due to our proximity to Putra World Trade Centre, we are often involved in high-profile events of international standard attended by the well-heeled  who are not reticent about telling us about the quality of the food,” says its sales and marketing director, Zakariya Musa.

So what are the hottest items from the kitchen? “Diners love our local take  on sushi as we have sambal ikan bilis and serunding sushi. Our Johor mee rebus and sup buntut bakar (grilled oxtail soup) are also favourites,”says Zakariya, adding that teh tarik can be ordered by the jug.

The hotel will be one of the stops join for Life & Times Travel KL Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Hunt 2013 on Oct 26. The food hunt requires participants to travel on foot or via public transportation around KL  to complete  tasks aided by clues.

Organised by NST Life & Times Travel and Ministry Of Tourism And Culture KL-Putrajaya Office, the event is in its third consecutive year. It’s open to all NST readers aged 16 years and above. There are exciting prizes to be won, including return trips to exotic destinations.

When asked about the challenge at the hotel, Zakariya smiles and says:  “If I tell you, it won’t be a surprise anymore. All I can say is that it will be Malaysian in nature, and a lot of fun.

More prizes for Fabulous Food Hunt
The only food hunt in the country is back for the third consecutive year, writes Hanna Hussein

THE Life & Times Travel KL Fabulous Food Hunt is back, and this year it promises to be bigger, better and more challenging!

The event, to be held on Oct 26, requires participants to travel on foot or via public transportation around KL city centre to complete  tasks using given clues.

Organised by the Tourism & Culture Ministry’s KL-Putrajaya Office and the New Straits Times, the Life & Times Travel KL Fabulous Food Hunt 2013 is in its third consecutive year.

Zain Azrai Rashid, the director of the ministry’s KL-Putrajaya office,  said the event is aimed at promoting the wide variety of  unique local delicacies in KL.
“This year, we plan to include more enticing fare that reflects  the taste of 1Malaysia such as satay, roti canai, rendang, char kway teow, nasi biryani, yong tau foo, mee rebus, rojak and more,” he said, adding that the event is not only a good opportunity to highlight the city’s best restaurants but also to promote food-tourism.

The historic Dataran Merdeka will be the venue for both the flag-off and prize-giving ceremony, which will be attended by Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib.

Life & Times Travel editor Zalina Mohd Som said the response last year was overwhelming and surpassed the target of 100 teams. “We accepted an additional 20 teams but reluctantly, we had to reject the rest,” she said.

The additional 20 teams did not receive the obligatory race packs but everyone had fun and most pledged to take part again this year, she added. This year, the number of teams will be increased to 150.

A bigger event also means better prizes, including cash totalling RM18,000 and lucky draws. The winning team gets RM5,000 in cash while the second and third will receive RM3,000 and RM1,500 respectively. Cash prizes are also offered up to 30th placing, compared to 20th placing last year.

The event is open to both locals and foreigners for teams of four each. All participants must submit the original registration form published in the NST. They will receive individual goodie bags with an official hunt T-shirt, as well as other sponsored items.
